Hello,

I keep looking at this and the more I look at it the more frustrated I get. I just can't seem to get the contrast and whites right I don't think. Any help, suggestions and critique would be great.

Thank you very much in advance

I think the contrast and the whites are fine but I find the background kind of distracting with the dark doorway and windows and the tilt doesn’t help.

Slight compositional and exposure settings at the time of taking the photograph would help. Shifting the subject slightly to the left would improve the composition. Also, including the subject's entire left leg would help, as well.

As for tonality, it would help to place the important tones at the time of exposure and develop the shadows during processing.

I agree. The image for this subject seems to be slightly overexposed especially around the face and hands. The fiddler blends into the background more than what I prefer. Consider increasing contrast between the fiddler's upper body and violin from the background. Also, consider toning the brightness down some, maybe selectively adding a little clarity to the fiddler especially around the face, hands and the face of the violin. You've also cut the fiddlers foot off at the bottom of the image, so darkening or other methods to de-emphasize the lower part of the image will help. IMO, this image begs for a little grungy post-processing.

Just my opinion, YMMV. Hope this helps
Mike

Maybe some local adjustments via selections & or brush work might help acheive your desired results.

In addition to Bob's suggestions, back off the whites a bit.
