I was using my R7 with EF adaptor for my 70-200mm f4. I was taking photos without any problems. All of a sudden the viewfinder went black? I had to turn it off and on several times before I got this corrected. Continued to shoot the rest of the afternoon without any problems. Any suggestions why this happened?
My EOS R won't wake up after an extended lack of use sometimes. I've had to do exactly the same thing, cycle it off and then on. I'm not sure if it's model specific or not but this very problem was documented years ago with the EOS R release. I've seen others comment about this on message boards.
I have had similar issues with adapters that have a slight rotational slack. Seems like is is related to tiny misalignment of the pins. Solved when i crafted a plate from tripod mounts in body & lens. That stabilized/eliminated the tiny rotation. SONY rigs and Canon 7Dii/1.4x extender.

Not yet but haven't been out and about yet.
Have some hikes and trips planned and will now be aware to look for this.

You might want to check out your sleep mode. I have mine set to 5 minutes before the viewfinder goes to sleep.
If the camera is old, I can understand that. Sometimes, I'll walk into a room, and when I get there, my mind goes blank. "Why did I come in here?" I go back to where I was, and I remember.
Obviously, that's not normal behavior for a camera. If it's under warranty, you could try Canon. They'll test it and say it's fine.
The quirks on my R5 is that without any handling of the camera the focus points will go hiding in one of the corners. I had sent it in to Canon, their response was “ everything checks out normal”. Haha

I have had 1 or 2 times when not everything seemed normal with my R7, but turned off, then on again fixed it. I've only taken a little over 1,000 shots.
If you have questions on a Canon call Canon they're great (800)652-2666
What were you trying to photograph? Was the camera set to Self-Censoring Mode? 😂
I would first sespect the power source, the battery, try another battery or power source, then look for other problems,,,
Are you chimping...it's an old DSLR habit hard to break.
What can happen is...as you look down...your eyeview turns off...and is switching to LCD panel...
You can get in a loop where you are moving in synch with the panel and eye viewfinder switching...everything is normal.
