I recently took the foot off my 100-500 to help me pack my gear for a trip. I'm not very quick, but I finally figured out that you just loosen the screw to the point that the foot pops apart and then is removed. That is very handy since the old EF 100-400 you actually had to take the lens off camera to remove the foot. The very unhandy part is that I apparently loosened the screw a bit too much (while using the combo on a tripod), and while carrying the camera/lens combo through the house by the foot, it popped apart and everything but the foot crashed onto the tile floor. Thankfully the R5 is a tough bugger as it seems no harm no foul. Just be aware that this , in fact, can happen with this lens, unlike the previous versions that it wasn't possible.
Yikes! Thanks for the warning.

Glad everything is OK! I probably would have had a heart attack if that happened to me.

Good to know.

I would like to offer a suggestion. On my 160-600mm Sigma Lens it has a foot. However, I have trust issues. I bought a FOTGA L200 for holding and focusing the lens. It’s not too expensive and it is made from durable milled aluminum.

I just looked at the Canon foot on my old 400 f5.6 'L' lens. This can't happen. I have to loosen the screw to allow rotational movement of the lens, but to remove the foot I have to pull the screwhead OUT. Two separate actions.
A backwards step maybe?

Yikes, thanks for the heads up, and no supper for you tonight!!!
Does the lens IS still perform?

This is the part of the lens design that I really dislike. It’s happened to me on more than one occasion when the lens was attached to my Black Rapid strap via the foot. I now have a tether screwed into the camera tripod screw attached to the Black Eapid strap and it’s saved me further distress.
