Interesting. It might be good after they work all the bugs out.

Sounds like they believe that they have.

I had eye-controlled focus on my Canon film cameras for years. I loved it. It worked perfectly! I could switch which horse was the focus point by simply looking at it! When I bought my first Canon digital, it was MOST annoying that the feature I most loved about Canon cameras was missing! When I go back to my film cameras, I am again amazed at how easy focus is. I was told that the R5 had it, but when I tried it, it didn't seem to work. So I don't know if it didn't work, or if it wasn't there.

Only the R3 has eye controlled AF with the eye.
The new eye acquisition AF in the mirrorless cameras uses eye AF and the eye controlled AF is frequently called eye AF.
We need now an easy name for eye controlled AF so the misunderstandings go away.
Hear that Canon?

Back in the day, I owned a Canon Elan 2e 35mm film camera that advertised/had eye controlled AF. Whether it was my glasses or something else, I struggled with it for a while then gave up. Even perfected, I think it would require practice getting used to. Sure would be fun to try tho. I make no secret how much I enjoy my R5 over any other camera I’ve ever owned. It would take more than eye control on the R5 ii to entice me to upgrade, I think….🥴

I had, actually still have a Canon EOS Elan 7E Date which has that feature but I truly can't remember if or how well it worked.

I had both the Elan 2e and still have the 7e. The eye-controlled focus, once calibrated, worked perfectly. And I wear glasses!

I had a DSLR from the 90's that had this feature. As I recall it worked very well and I have always wondered why it didn't carry over to digital.

The R3 has it.
Canon it appears is getting more confident with it.
Remember they invented DPAF as a precursor to making a better and superior mirrorless camera system and used it in the 70D years before the R system to get it perfected instead of making a half as...d mirrorless system.
Then look how quick Canon got the R5 out which is still competitive with the Z9 and a1 and now has 400 mp pixel shift technology.

I had the Canon Elan 2E and the eye focus worked great for me. At least until I slipped and fell off a cliff into Lake Superior. It was never the same after that.

Yikes!! That would do it, I'm thinking...... Camera was with you? More importantly, were you able to hold it above the water line?

Fortunately it wasn't that high. I went tumbling down the slope into the water. I remember thinking I needed to hold the camera up to keep it dry, but it went into the lake anyway. The lake was about waist deep where I went in - and COLD! I was visiting my sister, and we wiped off as much water as we could. She turned on her oven as low as it would go & I put the camera in for a few minutes at a time. After an hour or so it was well warmed and seemed bone dry. Fortunately Lake Superior is very clean & there didn't seem to be any build up.

I came out with some pretty impressive bruises & torn jeans, but nothing serious.
