I can't empty the trash on this iMac because "The Macintosh HD is in the Trash." Yes, it is there. I don't know how it got there, but I can't get it out. It's been there for over two years. I'm open to suggestions.

Call their “Help” number. They pick up relatively fast and they’ll tell you how to do it if no one else on UHH chimes in first.

‭(800) 275-2273‬

This is probably an easy fix.

Given that I don’t know squat about Macs, my first inclination would be to right click on it and choose the “put back” option..

Has it been covered? or has snow and rain fallen on it?

That works for files that were dragged to the trash normally. Unfortunately, it does not always work for files that are damaged due to some sort of irregular issue (directory corruption due to power failure, unplugging a drive that is still mounted, etc.).

I've seen this a couple of times. The Apple Store Genius Bar lady booted my Mac from an external drive and was able to repair the directory and relocate my files correctly. I don't remember exactly what she did, but it involved a third party software used for file recovery and drive directory repair.

This is Apple, not Windows. They didn't think of that, and they probably don't want to look like they're copying Windows.

Thanks, but I don't like talking to people.

That will be a last resort.

Yes, and it shows what on the drive. I also have the HDD on the desktop, so are they two separate drives? If I delete the one in the trash, will everything disappear? Probably not.

When they say it's "in the trash," they mean trash on the computer, not outside in the yard.

The icon on the desk top might just be an Icon and deleting the one in the trash might not cause ay harm but then I don't know for sure'
The call to the apple help desk would be the easiest.
