A friend/shooting partner got involved and became driven to become a "Guru." There are costs involved and if you love competition ya may get hooked. So if one has time, talent and a few $$s to spare give it a try. There are some very amazing photos created.

I did participate for a while some time ago. It was fun for some time, then it became apparent that you cannot past a certain level with good photos alone, but only if you spend money to "boost" yoir images. That was when I decided to leave.

The site can be great insiration though, when you grade others' photos and see how they interpreted the motto of any given challenge.

I have a team and play every day. I never use the in-app purchases, so it costs me nothing. It’s fun and can stimulate some creativity, but remember that at the end of the day, it really is a photography game, not a true photo contest. BTW, I am at the level below Guru, needing a challenge win to make Guru and again, that’s without spending money.

I tried it out for a short time, but like others have said, it was not long until the commercial aspects came to light. That's when I decided to cancel my account. I also did not feel the site afforded me much in the way of constructive criticism or advice.

Totally true that there is no mechanism for giving constructive criticism or advice. Again, it is entirely possible to play absolutely free. However, I reiterate that it is a photography game and nothing more than a game.

Correct this if its way off, but in a brief browse of posted images the site seems huuuugely into birds and scenics.

That stuff doesnt hold my interest so I didnt dig any deeper.

There are actually challenges on an amazing variety of subjects.

It is interesting and fun. I haven't gotten into any paying part of the site but I have been there for over a year. It is what you want it to be and what you put into it. You meet lots of people from all over the world and see a lot of very good photos. Enjoy if you decide to try.
