I think we can guarranty that this is a PC and not a MAC since the colors on the laptop display are not correct either.
Just sayin.....I think that's pretty obvious. I asked about the brand, model, CPU/GPU and graphics capabilities of this laptop before but still haven't gotten a responce. It would also be helpful to know the brand and model of the external monitor you are using and the means of connection (USB, DVI, VGA).

My lapton is a Samsung 17" NP70027C-SO1 USCOREI17-36QM/8. I don't have another monitor at this time and am looking to buy one if you have recommendations. My old one was a 23" Dell and my tecky says he can't get it to match the laptop. I was hoping to be able to get a monitor that I could match to my laptop so I could take my laptop0, download and edit pictures and then bring it back to the monitor and not have to edit twice. I certaily not tech savy so I hope this is the info you are looking for.
Thanks!

Are you using the VGA, USB or DVI output for connection to your external monitor? What old Dell monitor are you using?

I don't know and will ahve to check with mycomputer guru and get back to you. We disconnected the olfd Dell monitor and removed it so I don't know. My guru also tried a newer LG monitor (can't remember which one) and it didn't work either. I was hoping to find out what might be compatible and would bel willing to purchase a 23" if I could find one that would work.

Ok.I looked up your laptop and found that it should easily run any photo program that is presently available and your display is fine. I don't know how your GURU is setting up your system or what program you're using to open your photo files, but your computer should be reasonably accurate in color and hue and contrast even without calibration.
Just using the standard Windows Photos program should give you nice photo reproduction unless there'e a problem with your Gforce 650M graphics engine. It has 2 Gig of dedicated DDR5 memory so it should be reproducing colors and contrast with accuracy ( ok, so you can always make it better with calibration programs). But, you seem to think that the photos are being displayed wrong. WHY? Are you opening the RAW files or the JPEG files? RAW may require some manipulation and tweeking to be accurate. Compair your Jpeg files with your RAW and see what the difference is. What program are you using as a PP program anyway?
And remember, using an old LCD VGA external monitor will only get you 256 colors when connected with a VGA cable. Your laptop can reproduce well over 1 million colors and it's a full 1080P resolution. I would trust your laptop display over some old VGA Dell monitor anyday.
You asked about recommendations for a good monitor. For the $'s, one of our members told you about his offering of a Dell 2410U for about half price. There is also the one I use which is an ASUS IPS PA-248 that came fully calibrated and gives "TRUE COLOR" reproduction. It costs a bit more but has a 5 year warranty. (that's the best warranty in the business, full replacement at no charge for 5 years on all of their monitors) Recently there are numerous other 23 and 24" LED IPS monitors that are around $200 to $350 that will easily reproduce colors and come factory calibrated. Just be sure that you connect them with either the DVI or HDMI cable so they can utilize their full resolution and color pallet.
Happy shooting and good luck in your search for equipment. This is an endless and wallet draining experience. LOL.
Just out of curiosity, what camera are you using anyway? Could there be some problem in your camera?

If your "Computer GURU" is connecting this monitor through the USB port, it may require the monitor's drivers to be installed on your computer and change the output in Control Panel to function properly. Just a thought.....

Charlotte;
You'll also find that the 3 USB3.0 ports on the side of this monitor are very convenient for connecting your camera for photo downloading or other USB hardware or even an external hard drive as a backup device. I've found them useful numerous times, even for fast charging my Iphone and some of the point & shoot cameras the grandkids have. It sure beats plugging in on the back of my full size computer. And it adds a few extra USB ports that are always welcome additions.
I think you can even get this monitor for under $350 from NewEgg or TigerDirect or Amazon. Check the net for sales.

OOPS! I seemed to have left out a few things in my response. I have no problem between the color on my laptop and the printer that I am using. The problem was we could not get a monitor and my laptop to look the same. I will check with him on what typ of cable he was using. I doubt that many of his customers are into photography like us addicts are. I use JPEG and open my pictures in Adobe Photoshop 9. What I wanted to do was to travel with my laptop and then use the monitor at home, because my eyes aren't what they used to be even after cataract surgery so I love the larger monitors. I have gone a little crazy this year and bought some things I can't really use correctly because of my lack of knowledge, and strength. My husband has with the help of Ron from Feathered Photography made me a transporter from a push golf cart. I have yet to use it because around here I don't neeed it. I'm a novice birder but our sites are not really geared for a lot of hiking and switching equipment. I really wanted it for when we travel to other birding sites.
I am old and just reasoned if I didn't spend it the government was just going to tax it away. I am over 70 so adequate health care may soon be out of reach, so I'm just living every day like it may be my last. WHEEEEE!

Thanks so much for your advice, I really appreciate it.

Sorry, it's late and my mind seems to be a bit foggy. I'm a Nikon shooter who has just gotten a new camera D 800 because my regular one is in for repair and I have no idea when I'm going to get it back. Found a refurb for a great buy. At least I have a camera and tomorrow I'm going to try to start learning it.

Anyone who thinks boats are money pits just isn't taking pictures. ;>)
