U.S.S. New Jersey BB-62 1982 Activation
Long Beach, California was the scene in 1982 when the Big J was put back into commission.
This was the view just before the new crew was about to activate the ship.
Great view and time capsule! There's a utube channel that follows / documents the ongoing care for the
New Jersey, now a museum ship across the river from downtown Philadelphia. See channel @BattleshipNewJersey (Ryan Szimanski, Director of Education & Curatorial Affairs) and / or

My husband and my son were in the Navy on carriers.

The history of the 4 Iowa class battleships (Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri, and Wisconsin) is definitively worth pursuing. The Wisconsin and Missouri actually participated in the Gulf War in 1991 before being deactivated.

The New Jersey fired over our heads from off the coast of the South China Sea when I was in VietNam in 68-69.

www.BattleshipNewJersey.orgI live west of Philly and I plan to visit her this spring. I happened to be driving home from work (Newark De.) going north on I-495 where it passes close to the river, and there she was being towed to her final berth. It was about 3 hours earlier than expected, so there was a lot of unhappy folks who had planned to watch her come in from this great vantage point.

I will try to visit it this summer, it isn't far from where I live. This is a nice shot; the angle is perfect to tell the story and show the battleship's name.
