Exporting photos with keywords from Lightroom

Is there a way to capture keywords when exporting photos from Lightroom to an external drive so that I can find photos with the same keywords when searching the external drive without the use of Lightroom? I would like to plug the external drive into an iPad or laptop and be able to select and show only those photos with a certain set of keyword.

In other words, can I export all 35K photos with all metadata and keywords to a 256M thumb drive? Then, plug that thumb drive into an iPad or laptop and query by one or more keywords to find only those photos meeting the criteria.

Your keywords are written into the export image file, by default, along with the meta / EXIF data. You'd have to purposefully change the Metadata option in the Export Dialog to cause anything other to happen.

Yeas, but can I access the photos by keyword outside of Lightroom, without the lighroom app?

That's a question to be asked for the tool you plan to use. The Windows OS can list the keywords by adding a column to the display. I think you can search for / within these file attributes too. You can test and / or research the non LR tool (method) you're considering.

You might consider too other options, like considering how you group your exports, if helpful to your intended purpose. Or how you name the files, etc.

My work folder for my digital frame has 11,045 images from the last mass-export. I can use any relevant keyword and filter for the images that include that keyword via the search field, done in the Windows File Explorer.

I am a Mac user and have no tool in mind, but I don't think that would make a difference. What I want to do is be able to search the external drive by keyword without the use of lightroom. in other words, plug the thumb drive in any other device (iPad, laptop) and be able to find those photos that meet a certain keyword, or set of keywords, criteria.

Export 20, and place onto the drive, and open with the applicable File Manager. See what you can search / filter and how the process works.

As always - Chg-Canon offers sound suggestions. This interested me ...

Background: I added a keyword 'Zorro' to my exported photo of a historic building I shot in Florida. No other 'Zorro' word exists in the folder, subfolder, image etc. The photographs were previously export as jpegs to a folder on my Mac desktop named 'Trip 2023-0212' and the file name is Shephards_Mill-DCS00070.jpg

Search: Slected desktop and search Zorro - image found in a second

Yes Mac will search keywords. It won't search a hierarchy if you use one in lightroom. I was confused testing this out. It found 256 out of over 48,000 photos containing the keyword flower. When I checked in lightroom it found a lot more but I finally realized that Mac does not see the hierarchy that I have in Lightroom. For instance if I tag a photo with the Dahlia keyword it shows in the LR search but not the Mac search because i have Dahlia as a sub-category under Flower in my keywords. This is an external drive that I keep my lightroom photos on. I did not export to test but this is outside of lightroom with Lightroom not running.

So, hierarchy does or does not work? Does it seem to be the Mac version or something else, if the results are inconsistent?

How can I export from Lightroom to Mac Photos and include keywords so that I can query by keyword in Mac Photos?
