Another excellent reason not to leave your computer on overnight.

I seldom shut down my PC. I do an occasional reboot. I ran an ethernet cable over and around a double slider glass door, along several baseboards and through two walls to be hard wired to my router. Not as susceptible to invasion as a wireless connection. I have my old fashioned ways and I'm stubborn. At 86, I don't have too many fears of impending doom. However, I also have multiple Acronis backups, just "in case"! I have not done nightly shut downs for almost 17 years.

I pretty much do the same as you, Mark. I also set my WINDOWS updates to not auto install even tho I’ve never not done one. And I do full image backups once a month and file synchronization every couple weeks, both to external drives. To me, something happened with the OP’s system and leaving it sleeping or on or whatever overnight likely has nothing to do with it. That said, hopefully there’s a usable backup with his files intact.

I know Win 11 shows a different picture on start-up/wake-up while asking for the password. Windows even wants to know if I like it (top right). I haven't looked for where that setting is located as it really doesn't bother me.
I don't know if 10 does that, never had 10...

Have you used Explorer to view folder contents on C:?

Windows 10 does the same thing - as of fairly recently.

Sounds as if it might have updated from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

1) Right click on the icon in the lower left corner. Choose settings and then system and scroll down to see the details of your OS.

2) Open file explorer. Go to C: drive., then Users, then your name. Now look in documents and the One Drive folders.

3) If that doesn’t work, start your browser, download a copy of Search Everything and search for any file type you normally use such as .doc, .jpg, etc. that will give you the path to where your documents are located

Report back after you do those things. Windows 11 defaults to using OneDrive, so all your files may be in the C;/users/your name/OneDrive folder. (I despise OneDrive and a pain to get completely rid of)

Yea, Win 11 has a bunch of superfluous folders in Explorer, for me anyway.... "Quick Links" they call them.... Duplication of many folders. I don't like that.

Something like this happened to my cousin last fall. He logged in (Windows 10), and all his documents and desktop files were gone. He called me, I couldn't figure out what had happened, so we started restoring his most important files from various backups.

THEN, towards the end, we rebooted the computer, and all of his original files were back!?!

I have no idea what happened, but you might try rebooting a few times. Good Luck.
