Sorry to hear you stopped following Ken. He is a great guy. I have been following him for 20 years. In person he is a super gentleman. What you see is what you get.

Perhaps I’m being too harsh. I never took him seriously. Thank you for responding, im going to revisit his website. I know he’s well liked with my fellow UHH members so I think it’s time to reassess!

Thanks again
Paul

Excellent lens that is sharp in the center and good to very good in the corners. It spends more time on my camera than any other lens because it is so versatile.

I have one on my Nikon Z7-2 and am very happy with it. I chose that lens for the Z7 for flexibility. Im a fairly serious photographer but not an obsessively picky one, so whatever issues some folks might see, I don’t see them, or they don’t bother me. However, I do have a 100-400mm Z lens, too. It’s much heavier and pricier, of course, and not a quick change, but I really like it, too.

Thank you all for your information. I did just read Ken Rockwell's article on the lens which was very comprehensive. He does seem to like the lens. However, I was already worried that the 24mm might not be wide enough and now I know that it is really 36mm on the Nikon Z50. However, the kit lens 16-50mm is so small that it is easy to carry around if needed. (I have a Nikon 18-300mm on my D7100 that I really like.) I'll have to think about Z 24-200. Thanks again. You gave me the information that I needed.

Since you already have an 18-300 DX zoom, just use an FTZ II adapter on your Z50 with that lens, rather than buy a whole new lens that is made for FF mirrorless, won't be as wide and will be 50% shorter.

I do not own any of the Nikon Z series cameras and my advice is based on experience only. If I were you I would start with the 16-50. While using it see if its range of focal lengths fit your subjects. I am sure 16mm will fit you nicely as a general wide angle. For most people 24mm is all they will ever need.
The best part of the 16-50 is that you already own one. The 50-250, that you also own, could be used when you have the need for a longer tele. It is my understanding both lenses are reasonably small and light so carrying them should not be a burden.

Has anyone used this lens? I'm 80 years old and my newest camera is the Nikon z50...trying to keep everything lightweight. I have both kit lenses which comes with this camera, but I really prefer an all-in-one lens. I take photos of family and travel. This looks like a good buy on Nikon's refurbished sale. It was $899.95 and is now $599.95.... but I don't know anything about it. I would appreciate any advice.

I own this lens and I love it. I too take photos of family and travel and I have never really been challenged that it is not wide enough. At $599 it is a great value. I would not hesitate to buy it if I did not already own one. I use it on my Z50 and my Z6II and am completely satisfied with the results. As stock is limited at Nikon, I would but one before it is too late.

I love my 24-200...on my FF Z6.
I agree with all who say that the 36mm is not wide enough for a single walk-around lens. At least it is not for me.
In fact, I do bring my 14-30 with me and find it to be critically useful.
So, keeping this in mind, and if you do feel that 36mm is not wide enough; I would keep your kit lenses and not purchase the 24-200...no matter how great a deal.
Hope this helps.

I don't own this lens but here's a link to Thom Hogan's review;

I do have the Z50 and both kit lenses. Great little camera. I realize that I'm in the minority here but I stopped visiting Ken Rockwell's website a long time ago!

Good luck with your decision

Paul

Hey thanks for this link....reading it now as I've been considering this lens for my Z6ii and also thinking about purchasing the Z50....this lens seems like it would work nicely with both cameras and "extend" the reach of hte cropped sensor.

You could get the adapter for your 18-300. I did, for my 18-140 (also from 7100 to Z50). It works fine.. Only problem for little me is size and weight, and, so far, I'm so happy with the kit 50-250.

I've been using this lens for more than a year on a Z5 and Z6II. It's a great lens. My only reservation is that I'd like more reach, but it is what it is and the reach issue is my problem, not the lens'. Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Thom Hogan is a great resource for all things Nikon. His website is a little tricky to navigate because there's so much information there.

I made the switch to a Z50 recently and its a really nice camera, perfect for my needs.

The 24-200mm Z lens came with my Z5. It meets my needs and delivers beautiful photos. I bought the 50mm f/1.8 S Z lens in case I needed to take photos in poorly lighted rooms without a flash. I have used it twice. I hardly need it.

I own the 24-200 and used it quite often. It is not a good portrait lens or one for sports, even small kids playing sports. It does jump to F6.3 quickly. It can be used for landscape and travel. It is a light lens compared to many others. Compared to some of my older F mount lenes, it compares nicely, even to what were considered the better lenses. It is sharp in the center and does fall off along the edges. If that is a concern for landscapes then you can always focus stack. Overall, it's a good value lens for the Z system and I don't regret buying one.

i ordered mine yesterday. My advice is to check it out thoroughly. The 50-250 lens i bought with the refurb z50 kit was bad. I thought i was just having problems setting the camera up for back button focus.

I owned it for awhile but sold it back when the 24-120 came out. It was a good overall walk around lens but jumps to f6.3 pretty quickly. You might have trouble on the Z50 in low light. It will also have a 36-300 field of view. Ia that wide enough for your needs?
