I know there are some relevant programs out there. Can you suggest a decent and free program?
I appreciate your help.

I do a lot of coloring of B&W photos , and have for years using Photoshop with a Wacom Pen and Tablet . I have tried a few free programs and I just wasn't happy with the results . I came across a web site the other day that will color your photo for you , and allow you to download a free lower quality photo or pay a little for a high quality photo . If you want to check it out , just type this web address into your browser address bar . https://pallette.fm

That topic comes up every now and then. You have choices.

Photoshop has a neural filter that does a decent job of colorizing.

Here's a way of using palette.fm without paying for the high res and getting great results. What he does is download the low res version, expand it to fit the original image and change the blend mode to color. I've tried it and it works.

I use Photoshop, but it is subscription only (it comes with Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, Bridge, and some other goodies for ten bucks a month).

The Neural Filters are really cool. One of them colorizes images.

You can do it in Photoshop, there are several different approaches, do a search on YouTube. it's not free, but I went the Codify Pro route. its an excellent program and they have a free fifteen day trial period. For me it was worth it, you'll have to check the price. It has a great FB page and a lot people out there are will ing to share what they have learned. I'll hunt my archives and find something I can attach. I'll have to look later in the day.

The best one I have tried is MyHeritage.com. But it requires a subscription.

I have used Photoshop also, but it can't match MyHeritage. Not even close.

I watched his video before I tried it . I use another way to sharpen it and I use another way to download it to get a higher pixel copy

As promised earlier, here are a few images that I have done. The saddles are mine, the boy washing his face is from the the national archives and in the public domain and the family shot is commercial shot from another galaxy! One thing I like to do is include the edges of the original negative, but retain the edge markings of the original negative for authenticity. Hope this helps.
