what is the best single setting for the camera to give me a general clearly focused picture? ive tried most of the settings and have been disappointed in the results; they are not in good focus. i question the automatic action of autofocus, or do i need a new camera? ive also paired it with a sony tele fe4.5-5.6/70 300g oss.

I have an A6000. Its autofocus is great with every lens I own, including some adapted Canon glass.

Make sure you're not set on manual focus. Also, as mentioned, check if it is set for back-button focus, and be sure to use a fast enough shutter speed to compensate for any camera shake, especially with a telephoto lens.

I have used an a6000 for 7 years and have never had a problem with its autofocus. Its technology is a bit dated, but it still shoots exceptionally sharp images.

You might also check whether image stabilization is on or off. The a6000 doesn't have it but the lens you mention does.

👍👍👍 The FE 70-300 G (I own) on that camera which I use to own (now own the a6500) is the equivalent to a 140-450mm You need to be generally using a shutter speed of at least 1/500 sec to prevent motion blur. With the lens I usually use spot or center with autofocus set to AF-C (continuous) vs single. If all else fails, go to green auto mode.

Not sure why you replied to my comment with the above. I had suggested the Op undertaking a controlled test on a tripod to confirm the camera/lens produces a sharp in-focus image at specific settings.

I was nearly agreeing to your suggestion and offered in addition my suggestion to the Op. Sorry that you think that no one is allowed to comment on your suggestion.

You would have made far more sense responding to the Op rather than considering that you needed to tell me that you need to use a speed of 1/500s to stop motion blur.

Timeout guys. Anyway, let's hope this does not become another of those threads where the OP disappears into the night!

The a6000's autofocus was world-class when it was introduced in 2014. Although it's speed has been eclipsed by more recent models, which also have more focus points and new features like eye autofocus, I find that when the a6000 does lock on a subject the image is tack sharp.

Your lens has generally gotten good reviews; it's full-frame and on an APS-C sensor you are using the center -- typically the sharpest -- area of the lens.

Paul's suggestion is a good one, if you want more help from UHH members.

I have a Sony A6000 camera and a Sony FE 70-300.
Make sure the switch on the lens is on AF even if the camera setting is on AF. If the lens is set on MF it will override the camera AF setting.
