I can only speak from experience. Mine is that the stands in school gyms bounce and move a lot making it tough to hold steady. If you just want proof of life, shoot from the stands. If you want good shots, ask the coach if you can stand out of the way near the corner of the baseline. For all we know, the OP has young grandkids playing intramural.
Here's one at 70mm on a D500. I don't know how I would have used any more focal length, this is pretty tight.

Sports photography is about 'tight'. Although, from this position, you do show the idea of something wider rather than longer.

I got my used and I believe it’s the second model. I programmed the buttons, so I change from dynamic to group focus with some sec to hold the focus even the subject gets behind something. I shoot way easier with this lens vs 70-300 5.6…….

Must give a rousing second to this. I used the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 for years including the entire time I had my D500. My only reason for getting rid of it was along with my desire to move to the mirrorless cameras I picked up a bad case of G.A.S. and decided to switch to the matching Z mount. It is a great lens.

Their 24-70 f2.8 is equally excellent. Depending upon where I was set up, I would use either with no concerns. Under the basket it was the 24-70. From the corners or side, the 70-200.

It can take some acclimation as you will have a lot of bodies in the same spot. Not to mention referees who seemed to be well versed in how to get in line of view! Expect throw aways and use that burst mode!

Mostly have some fun!
Must give a rousing second to this. I used the Ta... (show quote)

I'll give a third recommendation for the Tamron. Have it and love it.

Hey Mondolinni!
I have and almost exclusively use the Nikon 70-200 lens on my D500 for photographing basketball...it's great for that! I have 6 grandkids playing basketball, from high school to youth league, and it's my go-to lens. I use shutter priority with a shutter of around 800, an ISO of 3200, and exposure compensation +5.0 with single-point continuous focus. I'm usually up in the stands, so the extra reach is perfect for my situations. The photos are sharp and in newer gyms no post-processing is necessary (in darker gyms I sometimes run them through Topaz Photo AI). Great combo for indoor sports and also wonderful for safaris...that lens always travels with me. You better get it quickly...in Indiana, our basketball season is starting to wind down. :)
