Bought a refurbished Chomebook and was told, and can't verify, that Google is no longer supporting that model.

I've since found out these computers are from a batch of school system computers purchased for resale. Supposedly restored to factory specs, but my granddaughter, who is quite computer-literate is finding problems with it. Also, having trouble with Amazon getting it returned.

I guess the lesson to be learned here is to avoid refurbished or asked more questions of the vendor before purchasing.

When I buy refurbished, I try to buy from the current generations, but your advice will be well noted. I never really thought about the support.

You don't give any details for why you are having problems returning. Was your purchase "sold by and shipped by" a partner vendor, not amazon?

This one can be returned within 90 days ("ships from amazon").

For future reference:

A Chromebook will receive a full Chrome OS update about every four weeks for at least five years from the date of release. That means that while updates may continue past five years, assuming the hardware is sufficiently capable of running them, you should not expect updates past that point.

Good morning,
I am on my second Chromebook. I purchased my first not long after Chromebooks came on the market. I used it for many years. Seven if I recall correctly. I think it was an HP model. Google often applied updates via the internet. After some time, Google made the decision to stop providing updates to units over a certain age. By the time was mine was orphaned, the battery needed replacing. I used it all those years for less than 200 dollars, never had a problem. With no painful decisions, I purchased another; spent more money this time as i needed 15-inch screen and lighted keyboard. Google is now on a five year cycle to my knowledge. So in two more years, I will be purchasing another. I was replacing Windows machines just as often or more at a much larger cost. A friend wanted a Chromebook, I advised him to verify the time of service before purchasing a used model. My thought is if purchasing base models, then purchase new units. The high dollar models may be worth purchasing used if low enough purchase cost. In my last purhase research, it seemed to me there is some difference between the models made for young school children as opposed to those made for college students and adults. Best Wishes.

I bought an HP referb a few years ago. It worked fine but I wanted it as a backpack unit to carry in the field with my photo gear. It must have been industrial strength -- the darn thing must weigh 8 lbs. or more. Needless to say, it never has been used in a backpack! Unless you know exactly what you are buying, it is often better to pass on things that seem like a good deal!

See the little "sponsored" note in the upper right hand corner -- I avoid dealing with sponsored items sold on Amazon. Amazon itself is great to deal with but when you buy from a sponsored site Amazon will require you to work things out with the vendor (which isn't Amazon) to settle the problem. After several weeks and attempts to resolve the problem, Amazon may issue you a refund unless in their opinion you received exactly what you asked for and simply have "buyer's remorse". They may side with the vendor in those cases and you are just out of luck.

The screenprint I provided is an "Amazon Renewed Product" which has its own return policy. I've copied some of that below, but it would be good to hear from our OP just for clarification and future possible purchases.

"Products on Amazon Renewed are backed by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee where specifically mentioned on the product detail page. With this guarantee, you are eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receiving the product (or within 1 year of receipt of a Renewed Premium product) if you are not satisfied.

Amazon Renewed products can be returned within 90 days of receipt of shipment (or within 1 year of receipt of a Renewed Premium product), and qualify for free return shipping."

Seems confusing to me. If it is an Amazon product, it shouldn't be listed as sponsored. In any case, if something is shown to be sponsored rather than coming from Amazon, I avoid it.

I paid almost twice that $90 price seven years ago. It's still working. I figure it's one step up from a Kindle.

By "trouble" with Amazon, you mean...
