Hi

Have been trying some effects/textures on my photographs. Any constructive comments welcome.

Without looking at other people's comments, I'll just say that I like your effects. I don't know what your originals look like, but I've found that I can salvage a lot of my clunkers with effects in post-processing. I'm a lot less of a purist than I used to be, I guess because I realized my skills are limited! Plus it's fun to experiment and take your photos to a different level.

All three images are great. It would be interesting to see the first image using a black or dark border. It may make the body of the image "pop" a bit more. Really like the effect. All in all, good job Fred.

I am curious how you removed the sky in all three pix.
All three are very nice.

Wow - You've created a water color effect, a pen and ink effect, and an oil painting effect quite nicely. I like #1 and #2 the best. I would hang those on my wall.

At the bottom of Fred Bear's post is a link to his Flicker account. Go to that link and view his textured photos. He tells what he did. Doesn't say what software he used, but Topaz Adjust can do some of them. His photos are fantastic.

After looking at Fred's images on Flickr, I played around with the Filters in Photoshop Elements and found several options that Fred may have used. Having a fantastic original image sure helps.

I have been looking at Fred_Bear's flickr account. I would tend to say to everyone, stop asking Fred to tell what program he uses. He won't say, because his work is for sale. And, when an artist has a system, most of the time they will not impart the system for fear others will copy and try to sell their work. Right now Fred has the exclusive on his system, not that someone can't stumble on the program.

All of these effects can be achieved in Photoshop (and I'm certain in other editors as well). You can experiment yourselves, which is fun and interesting, or go to a book called somethng like The WOW Book for CS4 or 6 or whatever. There is a DVD in the book which allows you to download the "actions" or steps used to produce similar effects. You still have a lot of control over the effects using these action scripts and can get a variety of looks to your photos. There is no mystery to this and I don't believe Mr Bear is trying to be evasive or hide anything. These are tools to use to enhance or manipulate your photos and some people use these tools better than others.

Are you using some type of software or just using photoshop?
