My faithful HP printer died of natural causes this morning, so I'm reaching out for guidance on replacement. There are more Makes & Models of printers than there are of cameras, so maybe you can advise me of which ones to avoid. Vendor options (Best Buy, Staples, etc.) are also a multitude. Thanks for your help.

Get which ever HP printer is the continuation of the model line of the one that died. It should be fairly close in controls and use. The same ink cartridges would be too much to hope.

I bought the Epson 8550 eco tank and in 6 months I'm on the 4th unit due to defects. Prints 11x14 and has the ink tank so cheap prints. Prints are great but I wanted photo printing and copy and scan. If you don't need Prints up to 13x19 then the 8500 for less money.

I think I've bought most of my printers at Staples. I just look at the options on what is on sale. Last half dozen prints that I've purchased have all been laser printers. I'd never go back to an inkjet. I do not print photos with them.

After buying quite a few HP printers over the last 30 years and an endless number of little cartridges that never fit the new printer, I bought an Epson ET-3760 online over two years ago. It came with one container of each of three colors of ink and three containers of black ink. I just poured in the second black container and still haven’t needed to refill the others. The ink comes in containers that attach down onto the printer tanks, have a valve, and do not spill, even if you only partially drain the container. I have never had an issue with this printer and will never buy a cartridge printer again.

Basically HP, Epson, Canon. If only photo and office printing then pick the one you want. I like Canon and I don't mind refilling the ink carts myself. I use Precision Colors ink. Check that out as an option. Probably won't get good photo prints with a Laser printer. If you have a scanner then you don't need an All In One. Epson has printers with big containers and not small cartridges. Take a look at what's on sale. Read other ideas here. Get a warranty.

Oh, I also bought one of those kits of fluids and “instructions” so you can refill your little cartridges. I ended up with ink on more things than planned and would want to see someone else do it successfully before I would try that again. And even if that worked, I would still go with the Epson. I don’t want a hobby of refilling cartridges forever.

Agreed. Not super easy. Need about 3 sets of carts. One in the printer -- one ready to go in the printer -- and one ready to be refilled. YT has great videos on refilling. Look at Jtoolman. If refilling not your thing -- then maybe Epson "big tanks".

Without mentioning anything more than the brand, you opened yourself up to a plethora of recommendations!

I wanted to give people photos so I wanted 11x14. I hated buying ink, so went with Epson ink tanks

I bought the Epson P700 this winter. It's still on sale at B&H plus a $200 rebate. Great photos up to 13" wide - sheets or roll. And I have a small Brother laser for everything else, like plain paper and scanning and copying.

The cost of printing with units that use cartridges is high. The cost of printing with a tank printer, such as the Epson Eco Tank line, is insignificant. They are also convenient. I have worked my way up to an ET1500. Had two previous Eco Tank printers. One I gave to my daughter and the other to a non profit. Both are still giving good service to their new owners.

I fought with dried ink and difficult to load cartridges in my HP and got a cheap Epson 440. Slow but rugged. Easy cartridge loading. Don’t use it much and the ink dried, ran a head cleaning routine and everything is hunky dory now.

For photos check out 13x19 Canon and Epson printers. My preference is Canon as they don't clog.

When you look at reviews, try and figure out which printer has software that works well and easy on your computer. In addition to software, there are issues with ink jet printers that stop working if there are problems with the printer or its software recognizing ink cartridges that should be recognized by the printer. I have found that wwith some wireless printers, to get them to work, you need to cable them to your computer.

For me I have a HP lazer printer, black print only. If it fails I am sticking with HP.
