I have three canon slr's but have found that my phone camera can take very decent photos.

I don’t know if it qualifies as a bridge camera, but it does qualify as the priciest “point and shoot” camera.

Is it a "point and shoot". I am kind of thinking people today unlike in the early 80's when people call a camera "Point and shoot" they don't mean point and shoot but rather a compact camera.

Oh I totally agree. When I hear “point and shoot camera” I think of those simple cameras of the early 2000’s that about all you could do is point and shoot and maybe zoom. I have an RX100VII and it is anything but a point and shoot camera. It’s compact, but very much a sophisticated camera in a small body. About the only thing point and shoot these days is a smartphone and they’re getting more sophisticated all the time.

Not sure about the reason(s) you think a DSLR would be a good first camera. They have typically served exactly that function, especially if the user has intentions of actually learning the technical principles of photography.

While I don't like the entry-level models of some manufacturers, there are excellent choices available on the used market that will present the various functions and adjustments in a far clearer manner for learning and for far less money than some of the models being discussed.

I realize that you may have some really strong reasons for your stated direction, but it might be worth opening up search a bit.

I bought my son an Olympus TG-6 for a first camera. Almost indestructible. Good in water, sand, dust...And a very good suite of built in capabilities. Macro, Micro, focus stacking...pretty good zoom, and a fixed telephoto available.
I like mine, he likes his!

The TG-6 is a good choice. Also quite good is an old Olympus XZ-2. It's 12MP and has an outstanding zoom lens.

An SLR has been a great first camera for decades. Why not now too?

Sony RX10M4 best bridge camera on the market. It is a great starter camera and will last a long time. No need to update everything you need is in your hands.

A second vote for the Olympus Tough. I also would consider a Canon g-series, used, and perhaps an older model. Good luck with your decision

An all-in-one superzoom would be good. Most cameras do all the work, f stop, shutter speed, focus ! Let the beginner think about WHAT is in the frame, does it mean anything ?

I suggest a Nikon F. It worked well as a bridge camera for Robert Kincaid.

So far suggestions run the gamut of pretty much everything but mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, and there might have even been a suggestion for one of those. The OP says “bridge camera.” Perhaps what he needs to do is define what he means by a “bridge camera” before suggestions are given. It was a broad statememt, to be sure. We all know what a traditional “bridge camera” is or refers to. Does the OP know that? So far, there has been no response from him in that regard.
