Question for war movie fans

For some reason, a war movie scene popped in my head and I can't for the life of me think of what it was...I've only seen it once. It was about a platoon of soldiers in (Viet Nam???) who, for entertainment started playing soccer among themselves and were convinced by military brass to become a competitive team, playing the locals (or other military). In the final scene or two the platoon was offered to be sent back to the States if they lost the final match against the local team and decided that becoming soccer champions in the war country was more important to their psyche and pride than going home before their official tour of duty was over.

The only one that occurs to me is the one with Stallone - Escape to Victory. I didn't see it, but it's WW II inside a German POW camp.

Go back home or continue fighting a war. Gee, tough choice.

I think you might be surprised Jerry, at the great number (from all wars) of young men that would prefer to stay.

I remember seeing it, the team did escape at the end (as the title indicates), but I won't spoil it by telling how.

I believe the movie you are thinking about is "The Boys From Company C".

It definitely did not involve a German prisoner of war camp, that's for sure. After being relieved from the bush, the Americans traveled to play the matches almost, I guess, like a USO entertainment troupe might do, except they played soccer instead of instruments. Looking at a list of top 50 war movies I was initially thinking something like Apocalypse now or Deer Hunter, but I don't either of those are it. Google search didn't help either. I guess I'll never know (unless I just happen to see the movie again by chance). Thanks anyways. I'm just thinking...another scene just popped into my noggin. I'm not sure, but it might be the same movie (or a completely different one). After falling on a grenade to save his buddies at the end of the movie during a sneak attack, before he dies he's asked what he wanted and he said to have a latrine named after him. That way, everyone will remember him...or something of that nature.

Quite a story. I haven't seen that one and will have to do so. I had a similar expirience a few days ago when "A Bridge Too Far' popped up on my TV for no known reason. I believe that one is considered one of the better war movies ever made and the cast is awesome. It's been many years since I have seen it but will do so soon and also the one described above which is very timely because of the recent World Cup. Thanks for posting it.

Planepics, the second scene you site was from the Green Berets, with John Wayne. The scene was "Provo's Privy". Provo wanted the latrines names after him and decided "Provo's Privy" had a ring to it.

I have a good friend a USN Dentist, rank then of Lieutenant, who went back two times after his initial tour in RVN as he enjoyed the comradery and atmosphere.

That 'name a latrine scene' was at the very end of John Wayne's The Green Berets. The latrine was named Provo's Privy.

Thank you everyone...and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! :) I might watch either or both of those movies soon. I have the boys on VHS tape but I don't know if I have it hooked up correctly with my new AVR - needed to hook VCR directly to TV as AVR doesn't have composite connection and haven't tried it yet. Green Berets I have on DVD.

I realized that as I was typing it, but I let it ride...
