Light weave...tight weave...rain shell...that's the minimal complete winter setup.
Do it right...you can stay warm and comfortable.
Do it wrong...you will start out good...and become more cold as time progresses.
I've
heard that Icelanders say there is no bad weather, just bad clothes.....

My wife grew up in the tropics...
So the first trip during winter I made sure we stopped over in Iceland for a few days.
Want to step outside I asked?...See what winter is really like?
Oh yeah...was the reply...for about 10 seconds.
Clothes and vodka.

The Winter in Iceland is similar to where I live in PA, just
MUCH WINDIER and wetter.
They may have a 5-10° differential between night and day, where we usually have a 20° differential.
Their winter lows go into the teens as we do, and their highs are in the 30s.
'cept their summers are not quite as warm as ours.
I found the wind to be the kicker there.

It is brutal here in north east Texas. 8 degrees last night. With wind. My cows are calving.
Well, it's supposed to get up to 35° here in Dallas today. Was very cold last night (9°, I think). It's been cold enough that I didn't want to go out and photograph this year's outdoor lights.

Made me think of all the poor (feral) animals outside (how will they survive?)
I feed several feral cats in my back yard. There is a small animal hut out there with a pad and a 100w incandescent lamp shining into it. I've seen several of the cats using it this year.

It was 10 last night and 24 right now - positively balmy - getting out my shorts and Hawaiian shirts 😎. The biggest issue in NC is wind (55 mph gusts here and 70 mph in the mountains) taking down trees and power lines - five hundred thousand without power this AM in NC.
And to think that I drove 2500 miles south to get out of it... Fail. Scratching my head on Padre Island, where they have shut the water off in the washrooms or the RV park...
No snow, just cold and windy... tsk, tsk...
Xmas day here. Sun is out, no visible clouds in the sky from where I am sitting, 22.5 degrees cent and climbing, very mild breeze. What are you all complaining about ?

At least you got an E ticket ride out of it.
Your reference to E ticket rides really dates any of us who understands what this means. It has been decades since Disneyland has used this system. I wonder how much one could get on Ebay if you have a unused, pristine E ticket in your possession? The nostalgia value alone would be large.

The same way they have for thousands of years

I am a little confused as to what goes where !
As others have replied (thanks, y'all) the looser weave goes closest to the body. The weave gives air pockets which the body can warm. The tighter weave goes over that, and helps keep the warmed air close to the body, and the colder air out.
Consider someone wearing a sweater on a windy day. The wind goes right through the sweater. If they put a windbreaker over it, they'll feel a lot warmer.
