When I got out of the military back in 1968 I wanted to let the hair on the side of my head to grow a little longer and get rid of those "white-walls". So I would go to the barber and tell him what I wanted but I still came out with "white-walls". That happened about five or six times until I went to a shop where one of the barbers had hair down to his shoulder. That's the guy I wanted so I let a couple others go ahead of me so I could get him. As it turned out I still came out with the dreaded "white-walls". After that I decided that the barbers learn how to do one cut at the barber school so I started going to salons and let the ladies do my haircuts. They got it right and gave me what I wanted. That's where I have been going since.
Have you noticed the new hairstyle among "cool" men? It seems to be anti-old man. When some of us get old, we have no hair on top, but lots on the sides. Now there is a new style among younger men: shaved on the sides and very long on top. Are they mocking us older guys? The young men pictured below want to be individuals - with distinctive haircuts. Those would have qualified for the military when I was in. I knew they wanted clean sides, so I entered basic thinking they would like it. Nobody got out of basic training with any hair.

The last real haircut I had was in Chiang Rai, Thailand over three years ago. Now I just put a 1/2" comb on my electric clippers and it is what it is. Since I don't go anywhere except to pickup groceries curbside it doesn't matter what it looks like.
You to the salons and they want to know what number you want it cut to. I don't do numbers I tell them short on the sides till you can see white and the top less than 3 inches. They tell me what number it is and 2 months later I tell them the same thing and I keep telling them I don't do numbers. That is like doing paint by numbers
