Any photos of historic value can be left to your local library or historical society. Rather mundane subjects, such as a bridge that may be replaced or a city street that will change over time are of historical interest to others.

Does anyone have a designated beneficiary for their photos, someone who who will know where they are, who will access them, how they will access them, who will care to access them? They’re not like cherished albums of prints in the closet. Some of us have thousands of photos stored for posterity. I have a couple thousand of what I consider "family" photos that I’m going to copy off for my two daughters into folders organized by year, but the rest may only have value to me. I’d like your thoughts about what your own general expectations are.

I shoot for a dance studio and I have them designated in my will. I have a 4TB drive that holds the images, web pages and various other information I have collected since 2013. The images are sorted by years and events.

I produced a CD for my 2 children back in 2010 when I retired for their early years, through high school. They are both in their 50s now. Those photos exist as prints as well. I don't shoot the family anymore I let that go as they all have phone cameras etc. My children & grandson are all computer savy. Grandson especially. They will find what has value and I have the passwords in a lockbox with instructions. I am a single Dad and this has been in place for sometime now.

Thanks for asking.

My wife asked me about my website.....
I told her it will go away when you stop paying the hosting bill.
As will the domains.

It's hard to believe after our rush to digitize everything but in the long run, prints and books will be the archive that survives all changes.

My family (and other) photos are in the Amazon S3 cloud and both my sons have the login and PW. Since one teaches photography and is the family archivist, pretty sure the family photos (many of their children) will survive. There are also copies on my main and backup computers (both of which are relatively new/powerful machines) and MDisk copies of the photo directory in my safe.

My photos are also archived with other documents (scans) in AWS S3 (glacier). All photos reside in a single LrC catalog and the bitter end of the backup chain is S3. My daughter also is a LrC user so she is good with that scheme and also maintains a copy of her backup there. The S3 layer I use is priced for write often read seldom and was the most economical of the services I found reliable at the time I selected it. Since my handicapped son turned 18 more that 30 years ago we have maintained wills supporting estate plans designed to protect him after we are gone. Thinking AWS would be rightly careful with the account ownership I listed it with my daughter as co-owner just like the safe deposit box. I make sure she knows the password and keeps paying the bill and I would never know what happens anyway I am comfortable. Sadly my wife of 55 years passed away suddenly and unexpectedly (Good for her!) last spring and successfully tested the first step.

Would take an awful lot of CD's or DVD's. I have over 500 GB

Yes, this was a topic of discussion with my daughter about the format issues going forward. We have video from their childhood that has already been burned to CD...but no one has a CD player anymore. What to do about that one??

I do think as things stand now, storage looks to be done in the cloud that are hosted at large server farms. BackBlaze seems to be a good option according to all the research I have done on the options. Amazon prime also offers free storage, but retrieval should you lose everything from a hard drive perspective is the weak spot here.

You can buy an external CD/DVD drive from Newegg for twenty bucks or so.

People just need to know to whom it should go.

We have 3 computers, none of which includes a built in CD drive.

Name Brand portable Hard Drive 1 TB might run $59 or less.
Much less labor than burning a sleeve of CD's. Still a current storage media.
2 TB Portable HDD might be $70 or so and hold 4x the data you currently have!
Also easier for your family to use/ search etc.
