You said that "RAW and JPEG are crutches to fix pictures".
But even if you do not perform any changes to "fix" your picture, like correcting settings or cropping, the picture will still be a file of some type, whether RAW or JPEG, or any other file type that cameras can produce (HEIF, TIFF, DNG, etc.)

Well you are wrong about that! There is a LOT of windows contamination.

MS and DOS/Windows has set the world of computing back at least 50 years. And they did it with illegal market manipulation. MS was too dumb to develop OS/2 so IBM did it for them. OS/2 was the windows that actually worked. Windows today still hasn't caught up to OS/2 of 1995, and it never will because it is a BAD design. UNIX of course is an excellent design, developed by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie and of course GOD.

Anyone intimately familiar with UNIX has to know there had to be some sort of Devine intervention to come up with something that well done, including inventing the C language just to aid in development.

It is just as clear that WIN had to be developed by Satan hisself. It's a tragic disaster.

Yes,

And more tragic is to see how programmers and engineers are taught that they should develop in something stupid like C# which needs the idiotic Visual Studio and can run only on Windows.

Or that they have to purchase expensive Windows Server user based licenses when Linux servers are FREE and are 1000 times better.

BUT sysadmins know better, and that is why almost all web servers run on Linux

And, all industrial systems (PLC, etc) run Linux

And all Android Phones are Linux

And Macs and iPhones are a slightly different flavour of Unix

And all routers, switches, etc. are Linux

And all AI systems are Linux (Jetson, Coral, etc.)

And MS has been stealing Linux stuff to incorporate in in Windows.

All other OS's (OS/2, PS/2, AMigaOS...) have gone the way of the dodo. Only Unix and Windows exists...

If you count the raw (... or RAW??) number of CPUs worldwide, more that 98% run some sort of Unix.

Always good to know something new - I was not aware that Andy Devine had a part in the development of UNIX. It's not right that he has not been given the recognition due him for that. Being a UNIX fancier, perhaps you could start the movement.

Correct.

And your point is???
I thought we were discussing "shoot".

You said cameras “shoot” (or record) raw. Cameras don’t record raw. They capture sensor data then a file is created. The file format could be raw, JPEG, or DNG or even, I think, TIFF for some cameras. Creation and formatting of the image file is a separate step from capturing the image data.

I am done with this now. If you wish to argue further be my guest but I will not respond.

So the sensor data is not raw information.....
I get it.

Actually, I don't.......

Virtually this entire 16 plus pages has been so typical of that which seems prevalent here on the HOG. Someone posts a question - or a statement, it doesn't matter - and 98+% of the responses almost immediately have nothing to do with the original subject, connecting peripherally by the usage of some of the same or similar terminology, but only intended to display the subsequent poster's professed vast store of supposed knowledge. This, then, is contradicted - or supported - at great length by other self-proclaimed "experts". Added is a portion of the 98+% who typically respond without giving evidence of ever having read the original post and/or subsequent replies! So far, no bloodshed of which I am aware, but certainly plenty of laughs generated. And now I will close my contribution to the 98%!!!

As others have said, RAW is not an acronym but rather refers to the unprocessed state of a photograph, hence raw. ... But the downside is RAW files are much larger than JPEG, and some cameras can’t even shoot in RAW.

I do not think that is true that some cameras cannot shoot in RAW. They just do not have the ability to write a raw file to the memory card.

Correct. They ALL get raw data from the sensor, not all cameras SAVE it though.
My Sony H-1 only saves JPEGs. The camera software converts the raw data to a JPEG, then puts the JPEG on the card.

How about "Rendering All Wavelengths", as in colored light? since a RAW file has more data.
just a suggestion.

There ya go. It now has an acronym and can be "legally" capitalized.

(I did like the one article somebody quoted though.)

I wonder if admin would consider a new sub forum, one that actually limits it's discussions to photography.
