Apple ID and P/W - A-OK!

It was over a week ago that I tried to get on my laptop, but Apple would accept my ID and/or password. They were going to send a code to my cell phone. Nope! Last night, I received an email from Apple offering to send me a code. This morning, I began the process, and eventually, they actually placed a phone call to my cell with the code. They wouldn't accept the first P/W I entered because I had used that before. I'm going to print the password and tape it to anything Apple. I guess I'm set for at least two weeks of Mac use.

I thought that had you mentioned in a prior post that you use a password manager? If you have one, that also syncs with your smartphone, you could have retrieved your password from there.
FYI, I use Bitwarden. It’s free, and used by many IT departments in corporations. I have at least 50 passwords in mine. You just need to remember one Master password.

Yes, I do, but until I log onto the computer, it doesn't do a thing. There are some sites that configure their password entries in such a way that LastPass doesn't fill them in. Unless I'm mistaken, whenever I want to install a program on my iMac, it wants a password, and I have to fill it in manually.

I believe if the password managers have it used at "subdomain.domain.TLD", if they change it to "subdomainB.domain.TLD it will not <explicitly> match, and therefore not show the login creds.
Maybe try changing the 'used at' in the PW manager to just "domain.TLD" might cover all subdomains?
I'll have to try that.
I have one or two sites that show no possible PW creds until I enter the ID, then it shows both the ID and PW.
Go figure.....

As I mentioned, just look up your password in your password manager on your smartphone and manually enter it on your Mac. Done.

Jerry, I too have taped my password to my desktop iMac. Hey, I'm the only one here to use it, and we don't offer "open houses", so it is my business. Shame on Apple.

suggestion:

I keep all my passwords in NOTES on my iPhone and lock it...

simple.... my wife and I know the password to unlock the NOTES App.

I even save my garage keypad combination in notes... so if/when I forget or die... the family can have access.

simple for me... plus Notes sync with all my devices

I use Notes on my iPhone to store passwords. I know, it sounds stupid and dangerous however, I use a 6 digit passcode and facial recognition.
Probably still stupid and dangerous.

If you want to accuse me of something, you might want to read the entire post first.

Jerry said he couldn’t get into his Mac because he forgot his password. I said if you had a password manager that also syncs with his smartphone he could retrieve it from there. Pretty simple.

Yes, he would have to enter it manually on his Mac once he looked on his smartphone to retrieve it. Are you suggesting that I led Jerry initially to believe that by him looking up his Mac password on his password manager on his smartphone that it would be entered automatically on his Mac? That’s the only thing I can think of from my initial post where I didn’t explicitly say the password would have to be entered manually. I said that he could retrieve it from there. You’re too smart, Loren, to believe that. I’m guessing you just didn’t see my initial post. If you did read it, well, then I can’t help you.

Although my cell phone will sometimes fill in passwords, and it does ask if I want to save one, I don't have LastPass on it (I don't think) because I don't want to pay the monthly fee. I think I'll print my 224 passwords and carry them around in a large binder. No problems with that plan, right?

None. Just make sure to easily identify that binder you should print “All my passwords” on the front cover and spine.
You may want to look at Bitwarden, which I use. It’s used by many IT departments in companies, and it’s free. Did I mention, it’s FREE. You download it on your devices and it automatically syncs between them when you make changes/additions. I like that when I register on a new site with a new username and password, on the top of my browser window it asks me if I want to save it to Bitwarden. I click on Yes, and it syncs to my devices. Very handy.

Yes, I'd hate to get it confused with the other one I carry with me. "My Banking Codes."
