Good day,

I am the fortunate owner of a Nikon Full Frame D800 and a great D4. I am feeling a desire for a good wide angle prime lens. I think I have it narrowed to the Sigma ART 1.4 20mm and the Nikon 1.8 20mm. In the "good condition" used lens market they are pretty close in price. I would like to ask the opinions of my friends here .

If you have a suggestion or opinion that is outside the framework of my question, that's ok too! Like if you think maybe a good zoom? Or a third choice in 20mm prime? or anything really that would help me.

I currently have a Nikon VR 28-300 zoom for Full Frame, and a Sigma 50mm 1.4 for full frame. (Not ART). I swap them back and forth between my two FF Nikons.

Thank you!
Don

Personally I would go with the Sigma. Especially because I shoot with a Canon/s .

But I have the Sigma and it is a fine lens.

I have always favored lenses made by the manufacturer of the camera and I have said in the past I have nothing against independent lenses, especially lenses when the budget is low.
The 20mm f1.8 lens is a superb, professional optic and it was specifically made to be used with Nikon cameras.

Why put anything but a Nikon lens on a Nikon camera?

Nikon's 20mm f/1.8 is a superb lens. That would be (in fact was) my choice.

I have the Nikon 20mm f1.8 and use it on my D850. It is an excellent lens. I recommend it. The Sigma is highly rated too.

I had the Nikon lens. It was very sharp. I don’t doubt the quality of the Sigma lens. However, which lens makes you feel better when attached to your camera? Nikon to Nikon , to me, is the gold standard. It is not necessarily true by performance but Sigma is not Nikon.
This is not a blanket endorsement of Nikkor lenses as I have owned some ‘stinkers’.

Go with the Sigma, great lens.

I have the 150- 600 sport lens, 150 2.8 Macro, 50 1.4 and they are all excellent lenses. I also have the Sigma 1.4 teleconverter which is great too. I shoot Nicon 850, 500 and Z7 all great cameras.

I have the Nikon 1.8 20mm prime purchased years ago for use with my dslr. Moved to the z7ii. Love that I can still use this lens with the adapter on the z line. Not sure you could do that with the sigma. Nikon lenses hold their value better than non OEE lenses.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my inquiry. I wish I could find a place that would rent me each lens for a week for a reasonable amount. Then I could try each. I think just going by manufacturer and name recognition the Nikon would be the safer bet. Seems most of you favor that one. Thanks again!

Thank you for your reply and input. That's a good point about adaptability in the event of switching to a mirrorless Nikon.
