The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is a good one, and I regret not including it in my comment. There may indeed be a Moongate sculpture there, I'm not willing to testify.
However, there is certainly a place Google Earth and others call "The Moongate Garden" a few steps north of Independence Av SW, behind or north of the Freer/Sackler Gallery (which may have recently been renamed due to the shame of the Sackler family's opiate dealings), and on the west side of the Enid Haupt Garden, putting it approximately 1500 feet southwest of the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. But the bottom line is that there are a host of photographically interesting things to check out down on the Mall.

Doh! The sculpture is actually Moondog. Funny that I was born in DC and lived in this area most of my life and hadn’t heard of the Moongate Garden. I guess it’s because it’s actually part of the Enid Haupt gardens. There are three distinct sections and it turns out the Moongate is my favorite.

In the District itself is Rock Creek Park, which runs through the city much like Central Park in New York, and offers many great photo opps. It's part of the National Park System.

I am planning a trip to Washington DC in mid-November.

I have researched many to the amazing places to see in the metro DC area.

I have also heard that Great Falls National Park northwest of DC is a great area for photography. I will probably have about 3 days outside of time in the metro area. Can you suggest other areas for scenery or even some bird photography? I will most likely rent a vehicle for time outside of the metro area places of interest.

Thanks for you suggestions.

Obviously you have never been there before. 3 WEEKS would not allow you to cover the Nation's Capital. You will spend most of your time running from location to location. Plan aheaD! Set a list of priorities and pursue them faithfully. Locate a favorite subject and walk it til you've seen it all. 3 days will not allow much coverage so do not waste it needlessly traveling around looking instead of shooting. You are in need of local assistance, hope you can find it. Good luck and enjoy the occasion.

Ya got some good taste there! The Moongate is quite lovely. I too was born there, and lived in Northeast up Rhode Island Av in Brentwood Village for my first five years, then across the line into Monkey County, about a block and a half west of East West Highway at Grubb Road. Maybe we were neighbors at some point.

I also have never heard of this monument. I will have to visit it the next time i am in DC. When i visit, one of the first stops is the Vietnam Memorial. Along with the nearby Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial gets me every time. Although I never served, I know some of the names on the wall and many of the names on the wall are from my generation.

quote=ronichas]American Veterans Disabled for life is the only monument in DC dedicated to living Veterans. Visiting at night was very emotional. Definately worth the visit.

***
Through juxtaposition of granite and glass, the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial conveys a combination of strength and vulnerability, of loss and renewal. Dedicated on October 5, 2014, the Memorial shines a light on the important lessons of courage, sacrifice, tenacity, loyalty and honor by bearing witness to the experiences of war heroes who were disabled as a result of military service. It is the first national memorial dedicated solely to disabled veterans, paying tribute to the hidden and visible disabilities from all conflicts and all branches of service.***[/quote]

Ford’s Theater is great for photography. Looking up at the President’s box where he was assassinated was gut wrenching to me.

You realize his mid-November trip has passed, right?
It would be refreshing if the OP closed the loop with us and told us what he found to be photo-worthy.

Actually this post has now become a refreshing tourist guide for any who wish to visit the Washington DC area (or within a couple hours drive).

Since the OP had requested "... Can you suggest other areas for scenery or even some bird photography?"

Bird Photography? Please allow me to second the posts on Harper's Ferry, where a semi annual raptor migration occurs late autumn and again in early spring. Here migration is funneled through a narrow gap in South Mountain.

Wonderful vista via Jefferson Heights above the Potomac River is accessed by a foot bridge across the C&O Canal and is robust climb to vantage points high above the valley confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Here during late autumn hundreds of hawks soar on the updrafts and glide southward on their migratory journeys... I've had them slowly soar pass me a just few dozen feet away... Absolutely breathtaking (and so is the climb up thus requires stamina and endurance.)

Harpers Ferry is so very near & dear to me. I've spend many days sharing this wonderful National Park with family, friends and even shooting commercial gigs here. The images below was for a Fashion Model's book taken on a very cold and gray autumn day at St. Peters Church (Harpers Ferry). Kelsey wanted a Gothic Narrative, so this Gothic Revival Architectural structure built in 1833 was chosen.

During the summer months Harpers Ferry offers water sports (canoe and kayak) and has many arts & crafts shops; eateries and such however off-season it is magical... You will have this stellar historical venue pretty much to yourself. Highly recommended!

Note: St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church (Harpers Ferry) towering high above the town below is unique as it's the only church in Harpers Ferry to escape destruction during the epic battles for the town during the civil war. Why? because it's Catholic Priest/Bishop flew the Union Jack from it's top spiral (a sign of neutrality).
