I plan on getting a mirrorless camera at some point. With my current setup, I set the iso and flash power based on a test shot. Can you adjust the brightness of the EVF on a Nikon Z6ii?

Ken Rockwell offers some interesting insight on the Z6II including the EVF.

The short answer is yes the brightness is adjustable.
Test shots will still be needed since the evf can’t show you what the shot will look like before the flash fires.

I take macros and sometimes use flash but have Olympus cameras.

Most often I use the flashes in TTL mode with the camera set in manual mode. The exposure is usually quite good. I can use flash compensation if necessary using test shots. When using flash I am usually doing focus stacking so a quick test is no issue. When using TTL it is possible to have frame variability in exposure but I have found this to be rarely a problem. Also note the direction of the flash lighting is often from a different direction than the ambient light.

If you are using a manual flash there would be no way for the camera to know the light output of the flash.

Thanks for the pointers. I found the answer in this thread:

You need to turn off custom setting d8, Apply Settings to Live View. You are seeing what the photo would look like without any flash applied. The camera cannot show you the picture with the flash before the flash occurs.

Turn d8 Off to adjust brightness and hue in the EVR or the back screen for ease of viewing.

I shoot the Nikon Z6 for my macro sessions in the field and I use a flash with a large lens-mounted diffuser. If you don't want to see the dark image through the viewfinders, go to the menu "d8" and set the "apply to live view" OFF.

Thanks! That is the exact information I needed.
