I think I heard him say something about thinking it was a Nikon.

I was on a windswept beach in Iceland a year ago. (Black Beach near Vik) The wind was strong enough that the sand being kicked up really stung my face. When I got back to the car I noticed that the filter was pitted in a few places. And I had been careful to keep the lens cover on except when I was actually taking a picture.

Was it a $275 filter ? Pleeeeease let it be that ! Pitting a $40 filter is just borrrring.

No thanks. I prefer my lenses and many other things naked.

I see the benefits of naked however in 1984 I dropped my brand new Canon EOS650 on the flagstones of a restaurant in Amsterdam at the start of our first European trip. Landed right on the UV filter, shattered it, I thought I was going to die, lens and camera were fine! Been a protective filter guy ever since! Never noticed any image problems with high quality filters, B+W, Polarpro, Breakthrough Tech.

I have dropped a lens WITHOUT a filter, hit the front element, NOTHING happened.
The front element of a lens is about 5-10 times more resistant to shattering than a filter, ANY FILTER.
Don't believe it, watch this

Like Steve, the only useful filter, and the only filter I use on a lens is a Polarizer. A UV filter used for protection is a myth. Your end element on most modern lenses can take more punishment than you think.
Personally I would never use any filter covering my expensive glass lenses, it is a waste of money.

Ken Rockwell puts a filter on all his lenses. I can't believe the number of people who profess to be 0.3% more knowledgeable of photography than Ken Rockwell.

Yes, this is one area Ken and I do NOT agree - but that does not keep me from respecting his experience ! Everyone has a few idiosyncrasies and this is one of his ! .....

I don't have a dog so I don't use protective filters. I do use neutral density filters quite a lot but I don't like the time and effort it takes to remove one filter and add another.

Possibly because he refuses to use lens hoods. Read that many times in his reviews.

The best protection many photographers seem to use is being ignorant of the risks.
