I agree. I currently own the D850, which is a phenomenal camera. Nikon's mirrorless equivalent is the Z9. Except for a few minor improvements the camera has all the same specs as the 850, except they very stupidly added a built in motor drive which increases the size and weight of the camera considerably. And it's certainly not worth the $5300 price tag! Nope, plan on keeping the 850 for quite a while..

I turned 70 this year. I probably will not need to buy another car because my 2019 Subaru will most likely last longer than my driving ability. We have lived in the same house for 30 years and it’s paid for. My kids are all grown and are self supporting. I ordered my Z9 the first day I could to replace a well worn D810. It is like a dream come true. It is silent and fast. Best AF I have ever used. The “S” lenses are very good, but I can still use all of my old glass. It is most likely the last camera I will own. By the time something better comes out, I will be too old to learn how to use it!

I use Nikon cameras and have since 1972. I have no desire or interest in changing to mirrorless. I see no personal advantage in doing so. I do have one mirrorless that I use quite often but attach it to a mirrored body.

So they say two main things - less camera shake because the mirror doesn't slap - and the wider mount would favor faster lenses - but with the improved ISO's now available hardly a huge point - I would buy one today if my old lenses would fit, but I have zero desire to semi obsolete about sixty lenses

What does a built in motor drive, drive?

Exactly. It's who is behind the camera that matters most

As an amateur photographer with no real aspirations other than making the best picture I can with the gear I have with me at any time, I got a LUMIX LX7 some years ago. Never really considered whether it was mirrorless or whatever, just that the reviews were good and it fitted in my pocket.
I found having it with me more often than not, due to its size, out weighed the advantages of my DSLR that was more than often left at home or in the car when I needed it with me.
I now have the LX100 mark 2 and the Nikon 7100 and its various lenses is only taken out for ‘special’ occasions.
I still don’t think about whether its mirrorless or not when I push the shutter release.

I went Mirrorless and I would do it again.
I think it wont be long and nikon will phase out
The old lenses and the DSLR cameras.
will it make you a better photographer, NO
will your images be sharper and will you have better tracking for BIF yes.

It isn't the mirrorless per se that makes them 'better' than DSLRs. What it is is the newer sensors, faster processors, and more sophisticated AF algorithms that those two things provide. The mirrorless part mostly is coming along for the ride because it's fewer mechanical parts to break and they can make the body smaller and/or lighter for the same sensor size generally. If…but we won't…we were to see a new DSLR body introduced today it would have a great deal of the mirrorless advantages included…not all obviously since (for instance) the mirrorless has an EVF which shows you what your image will look like at current settings and a DSLR has an optical viewfinder which won't. A lot of folk get hung up on MILC vs DSLR when it's really older vs newer/more powerful electronics. There are also some advantages in that MILC generally has a wider lens throat at the body and that along with improved optical design software makes mirrorless lenses generally better than older DSLR lenses…but again a lot of that is just technological progress and not an inherently better thing.
It isn't the mirrorless per se that makes them 'be... (show quote)

Are we really going through this again? Many of the advantages are directly related to being mirrorless, especially faster, more acccurate AF and faster frame rates.

As soon as you trust your mirrorless camera, you will know how to become a photographer.

Not just faster lenses, but better design because closer to the sensor. IBIS and adapters opens up a whole new world of options for non-Nikon lenses, or vintage Nikon that had no stabilization. If you've got 10-20 more good shooting years in you, mirrorless is worth considering.

What advantages, if any, does mirrorless have over mirror? If you were going to upgrade would you go to mirrorless.

Well, I have three DSLRs and I, like so many others have no plans nor desire to switch to mirrorless. Cameras are like cell phones and computers. There will always be something people will believe and justify as being better and the manufacturers are grinning all the way to the bank.

Not just faster lenses,...

The Z lenses are not all faster than the F mount versions. Some are slower and for that reason cheaper. The AF-s 800mm comes to mind. My AF-s 200-400 f/4 is faster than the Z 100-400 f/4.5-5.6.

So while there may be faster Z lenses, there are also slower ones. It's one way to keep some prices down.
