I was surprised how difficult it was to get the shutter count for a Canon camera. Local camera store gave me instructions but it did not work for Canon because Canon does not recognize EX files.

I then watched U-Tube and followed instructions but although the software did recognize my camera, it did not provide the shutter count.

I finally called Canon and explained my frustration. The Canon tech said Canon requires you to send your camera to the factory to get the shutter count. You must pay shipping both ways and provide insurance and request signature of receiving party. There is also a $59 dollar charge. I asked about the apps claiming to give you the shutter count and he said even if they work, they are inaccurate.

The tech also informed me that a new shutter was under $100 with a labor charge of $200 for a total of about $300.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks,
Jim

The APP Store has a "Shutter Count" app that allows one to access this information. There is a charge of $3.99 usd to buy it. I keep track of all my Canons using it. Hope it can help you.

I can't understand why some companies make it hard to find the shutter count. You'd think they would welcome the bragging.

I use the site shown below. I choose a photo (raw file) that I haven't edited, upload it as directed by the following site and in about 2 minutes I get the shutter count number on the screen. No cost involved.

For an EOS 80D, it looks like $10 gets software that runs on some Apple systems and can determine an EOS 80D. https://shuttercheck.app/

If there's an Apple version, there's probably a Windows version too. Check all the specs, including OS version and supported camera models, before buying shuttercheck or any other software.

I use the free eosmsg utility. Ran it just now on my 80D with the results shown below.

I used this to get a shutter count on a 5d2 about 8 months ago. I used the Tornado SCF version, which is "free." When you d/l or run, you'll be prompted for a valid email address. There has been concern expressed by others because the company is Russian. Honestly, I have four address and don't remember which I provided but I've never received any solicitations that I know of. And, if you're hesitant, here's results of a google search that has a couple postings of interest. One is from the Magic Lantern folks.
The search: "is tornado sfc camera software a russian company"

I tried this site first. Canon does not support EXIL files.
Thanks for trying to help.

I use an App called "Shuttercount" on my Mac for my Canon 60D. It can be found in the App Store. I think it costs $5.99.

I, too, own an 80D and wished I could get a shutter count, particularly since it was a used camera. But it is a great camera and I'll use it until it "don't work no more" then get another.

I noticed that also. But he’s too good and too helpful to be criticized for a math error. 😂

If anyone wants to know the shutter, you don’t have to send it back. The day you buy it start counting every time you press the shutter. Walk around talking to yourself and saying how many times you pressed the shutter. Be careful not to pass anyone who will shout out random numbers screwing you up. PS, don’t buy two cameras because keeping 2 sets of numbers running in your head is confusing. Don’t wait on lines in the bank, post office or supermarket. Just jump to the front of the line.

By The Way, I hope no one took me seriously. Oh, how many M&Ms are in a bag?

Agree, thanks. I'll have to save the corrected version as I seem to have lost how to do math ad-hoc.

No problem. I’ve done the same with too many 0’s. 😄😄
