Every few months someone mentions Pentax (hint, hint).

If I understand correctly your Brother-In Law wonders if investing in a lens or lenses for this camera is worthwhile. I have never used it so can't supply any info based on personal experience with the camera. However, there is a comprehensive review and reviews by users on the Pentax Forum. It's difficult fo find but it's at https://www.pentaxforums.com/camerareviews/pentax-k100d.html. There are lots of specs on the camera listed also. The ratings there on the camera are lower than for most Pentax cameras. Also, it was only manufactured for a year and then replaced by the 100D Super, which was also only manufactured for a year and then dropped from the Pentax lineup, which may not speak well of it. But if it's free that counts for something and there are many inexpensive used lenses available for it. It does appear to be fairly advanced for 2006, having in-camera shake reduction for example. There is a link to order a users manual for it on that website.

Same here with a IstD S , i think the early CCD sensors did better then the newer ones , better colors / vivid .

The early sensors were CCD sensors. Today, CMOS sensors are built. There has been plenty of discussion about if CCD or CMOS are better sensors. The sensor manufacturers prefer to build CMOS sensors. The astrophotography people often prefer CCD sensors.

I had one for several years before giving it to an aspiring photographer granddaughter. I’ve been a Pentax user for 40 years. The controls are fairly easy to understand and they are built to withstand a lot of abuse. The biggest minus is Ricoh Pentax doesn't have hardly any retail presence so it’s hard to get a hands-on. But you have the body already. Just be sure the lens has the Pentax bayonet mount. I suggest looking on the Pentax.com site, they have an equipment section and good forums for asking questions, etc.

This was a beginner level DSLR about 17 years ago. Any Pentax lens will fit this camera.

If I were given a lensless 17yr old base model digital camera I would certainly NOT invest even $100 in getting a lens for it, even if it were one of the popular lens mounts.

But for Pentax I wouldnt get involved at all. A camera not only needs lenses but also 2 or 3 batteries (plus a charger ?). Its a paper weight.

The K100D was the first K digital. Before that Pentax made a bunch of IST-D models which I can't tell which one is which.

With a few lenses { known as “KAF4” lenses}, the body can’t control the aperture, but they tend to be expensive.
