Those "cat" pictures are beyond magnificent...in my humble estimation!! I never heard of a Serval, and really enjoyed your informative info. Your photos caught more than just her breathtaking beauty ...I could feel her thoughts!
I really love your work, and always enjoy your comments and info.!

You are too sweet! Thank you! I was super excited to see one on this trip, then we ended up seeing two!

Great set of a beautiful creature!

As for having a Serval, there are plenty for sale (and not that expensive as pure bred cats go) as well as F1-F5 Savannas (Serval/domestic cat crosses). Now whether it’s a good idea or not, I wouldn’t opine. What I will say is that I’ve seen one at a cat show. He was on a leash, but it didn’t seem necessary. He was uncaged and sitting and was perfectly calm even though there were dozens of curious strangers all around him. He looked alert and untranquilized, but I don’t know that for sure.

While I think it would be fun to have one, I think they belong in the wild. I have 2 domestic kitties and I love them to pieces!

I am a bit embarrassed to say that in the last photo I was either so engrossed in taking the cats photo I did not see the hyena OR, more likely I was taking the hyena and did not see the cat.... I do not ever remember thinking wow, I got a photo of a serval cat stalking a hyena! I also can not imagine it was actually going after the hyena....

These are somewhat rare to see. We did see 2 different cats, always later in the day.

The serval is a wild cat native to Africa. It is rare in North Africa and the Sahel, but widespread in sub-Saharan countries except rainforest regions.

The serval is a slender, medium-sized cat that stands 54–62 cm at the shoulder and weighs 9–18 kg. It is characterised by a small head, large ears, a golden-yellow to buff coat spotted and striped with black, and a short, black-tipped tail. The serval has the longest legs of any cat relative to its body size.

Active in the day as well as at night, servals tend to be solitary with minimal social interaction. Both sexes establish highly overlapping home ranges of 10 to 32 km2, and mark them with feces and saliva. Servals are carnivores – they prey on rodents (particularly vlei rats), small birds, frogs, insects, and reptiles. The serval uses its sense of hearing to locate the prey; to kill small prey, it leaps over 2 m above the ground to land on the prey on its forefeet, and finally kills it with a bite on the neck or the head. Mating takes place at different times of the year in different parts of their range, but typically once or twice a year in an area. After a gestational period of two to three months, a litter of one to four is born. Weaning occurs at one month, and kittens begin hunting on their own at six months. The juveniles leave their mother at 12 months.

You can tell by the intensity of the eyes it is getting ready to pounce on something.

Nice shots!
