Hhmmm, memories. Food for thought, and remembering that life is not all roses and is full of contrasts. I try here to remember the richness of life but to represent some highs and some lows. Overall, I must conclude that I have been blessed. Regrets are surely insignificant on the scales of my life and I am profoundly grateful.
Canada features hardly at all in these musings, and has not sparked dominant images for me, even in over half a lifetime. But perhaps the greatest memory will be that she has given our family such peace and tranquility that we shall cherish for ever.
Favourite childhood home, Cheshire, UK. Of course, it calls to mind many other homes of my lifetime
Favourite home in Kenya. Designed by my multi-talented Mum in the '50s, it stood above Mombasa's Likoni ferry, with spectacular views up the harbour
A powerful memory - the bad old days for these Ugandans - Rhino Camp market, 1949
A "clachan" in County Clare, Ireland, 1957. You won't find places like this any more
Remembering bad times closer to home. My wife's relative served with the Canadian forces in WWI. Here is a censored, but I suppose comforting letter home from the battlefield.

Ah, the wildlife! Seen here from Treetops Hotel shortly after Elizabeth II ascended the throne. On leaving, the guide advised ladies to visit "the facilities" if they had not done so: "Not many ladies can say they sat on the same throne as the Queen"
I'm afraid that forest is now gone, but in my time, the wildlife provided the foundation for many youthful adventures. Here, rhinos "tamed" in 3 and 5 days (L-R). Mum always made me wear headgear and shoes, somewhat humiliating among my friends

Around 1960 or so, when i was 11 or 12, my dad took me to an industrial show of stone quarry and other equipment. He was the foreman of the crushing operation of a stone quarry in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. One incredibly unique opportunity for me was to have my -picture taken with a company mascot using a Polaroid camera. I was given the photo, too. What a thrill for me back then. The photo did not have the acetic acid wipe applied evenly, so the photo became streaked overa time. I have tried my hand at repairing the scanned version of the photo. -Richard

They used to regularly advertise them on the radio by us - a variety of places - and now, nothing
