thanks for your input on understanding Auto ISO, although I meant to ask about AUTO ISO & MANUAL MODE, might you add this to your present explanation?

Also, I am not yet clear about EC requirement in the AUTO ISO & MANUAL MODE.

Thank you in advance for your Knowledge of the many aspects of Digital Photography.

EC works well with auto ISO when needed. Take you best shot. Check your histogram. Make adjustments as needed. Take another shot

Your camera 'pegs' the AUTO ISO to the 0-mark. You can't use Exposure Compensation to reposition the metering to the left or right of the 0-mark. This is an 'advanced' feature of newer and more advanced cameras than the D3300. You may be different, but I'd prefer AUTO ISO in the semi-auto modes where I can also apply EC to the camera's metering. Cameras that can support EC with AUTO ISO in Manual are the cat's meow. I think that's the everyone should shoot, but you need a camera that has that feature.

With the Nikon the EC always bias the meter so that if you use auto ISO and manual and apply the +2/3 EC the meter indication won't move off the 0 but the exposure is increased.

Without knowing the specifics of your camera model or guessing as to how it works with respect to "AUTO ISO & MANUAL MODE" along with EC I suggest you confirm it yourself.

a) Set your camera manually to f/8 and 1/200s with 'Auto ISO'.

b) Go outside and take a picture.

c) Adjust the EC say to -2 and take the same picture.

If the brightness of the picture is less than in b) (shot without EC) EC is affecting the result. If the brightness is the same, it is not.

Get familiar with Program, Apeture and / or Shutter priority.
Get familiar with your camera meter display in the viewfinder display. Use your EC to 'position' the meter slightly to the right of the 0-mark on the meter, try +2/3 as a start, this biases the camera's metering solution to a brighter overall exposure. Really, once you set the EC to +2/3, you can forget it. You just adjust the shutter speed and / or aperture in the other semi-auto explosures, letting the camera react with the ISO and / or other settings.

Yes, Thanks for this helpful info, I must practice more so I become a better Photographer, now with Smartphones being in our pockets almost all the time, my DSLR Photography has been on the back burner. My Wife and adult children keep telling me to SELL my DSLR Camera & Lens & extra equipment, but just not ready for that yet.

Glad to help. Your D3300 is a small and very capable 24MP digital camera. It takes a bit more thought in using, say vs newer and / or more advanced models, but there's nothing lacking in this model with the proper shooting technique.

A photographer brings their camera, and sometimes, that's the hardest part to accomplish.
