Earlier this year, I owned a 5d4 and a 7d2. In my mind, I was exactly where I wanted to be including lens inventory. Then I tried a R5 and was almost instantly sold on the focus system improvements. I sold both bodies and the 7d2 kit lens and made the plunge via Canon’s refurb site and their Loyalty Pgm, saving an extra 10% on both the body and EF to RF adapter. A fellow UHH member said I’d never look back. He was spot on.

The time is always right to do what is right and buy a mirrorless camera.

The best argument for only needing one Canon camera is the R5, IMO. I don't miss my 5DIV or 7DII.

I'm 74 and I won't concede that any new toy is my last until I get old. Still, if I were to make my "final camera upgrade" it would be the R5. It's the best of all the Canons you list and who doesn't want the best as their last? The Sony? I know nothing about it but it would have to be some camera to beat the R5.

Here, here. I'm 67 and concur 100%. Absolutely right.

Canon presently offers a refurbished 5Div for $1,799. There's a more affordable resolution upgrade versus 5Diii for those fearful of dropping two megapixels by going to an R6--albeit an upgrade that foregoes advantages provided by full frame mirrorless models, particularly the R5, R6, and R3 versions.

Without getting into a convoluted statement... I use a 500mm f4L lens which has become more difficult to heft about... the equivalent R lens is about $13K... IF the R5 can handle this lens and adapter 1.4x I might consider the upgrade for the mp increase... I don't want to buy the higher f stop lenses which are a LOT cheaper ... that's about where I am presently ... thanks

I don't have a 500 but I have used a 300 2.8L IS II with a 1.4X on a R5 a lot without a hint of issues. The lens + 1.4X combo weighs a little over 6 lbs. This is a great lens on any body but the eye detect/tracking is a game changer. There must be many others out there using even heavier big whites with an adapter.

A side note: There is a rumor that the upcoming RF 300 & 500 lenses will have built in 1.4X extenders. If they can reduce weight and shorten the MFD as well, this could be a real winner. Consider the RF 800 knocks 3 lbs off the EF version and has less than half MFD.

I have a 500 f/4 (version I). I have not used it--with or without the 1.4x iii teleconverter, as the RF 100-500 +/- RF 1.4x suits my needs, but I do know that the EF lens and teleconverter mount onto the R5 exactly as one would expect, using one of Canon's three EF > RF adapters (I have only the basic $100 adapter).

Thanks to all of you for the great advice. Pearls of wisdom. I had a chance to watch a videographer using an R6. Chatted with her and was able to try it. Impressively fast focus. My hands are not as steady as they used to be so having IBIS will be helpful. I do both stills and video, so the R series is looking attractive. Now for the price ...

Perhaps my standards aren't as high as those of some commenting here who are skeptical of the R6, but I don't think you would be disappointed in an R6--and certainly not in an R5. As I mentioned earlier, unless you regularly crop severely AND then need to print very large sizes, the R6's 20mp resolution is plenty.

Don't get me wrong . . . I use my R5 as primary body and it gets 80-85 percent of the work. But that isn't because I don't trust the R6. I'm almost exclusively a landscape shooter (I very rarely crop at all) and my customers frequently order canvas and metal prints up to 80 inches wide. The R5's 45mp sensor is probably more capable at those sizes. But for 24x36s or 30x45s? I'm just as confident with R6 files as with those from the R5. And, the R6 plus adapter is no more expensive than the new 5Div you were considering. To me, it's an obvious choice if you don't want to spend $3,900 plus adapter for the R5. Either way, I predict you will love the Canon mirrorless full frames--those with IBIS, that is.

Like you I have the 5d3 & lived it along with the EF lenses, 24-70, 70-200, 100-400, 100 macro,17-40, 50 1.4 & 85 1.8. Bought a 6d & 24-105 f4, & 14-35 f4 and never looked back.
Use the EF lenses with an adapter & am perfectly happy with my decision.

There is currently a used, less than1500 shutter count in mint condition for sale on eBay. I’d buy it in a heartbeat. 100% positive feedback on seller. I have one I bought a year ago in used condition for same $$$. Have been very pleased.

….. Should I consider the Mark4?……

For the longest time I was loyal to the Canon EOS Rebel 2000. It was amazing and still is. Then, I reluctantly went for the 5D Mark II. Here is another gem and I love all I can do. Then I went for a Mark IV. Again I have another gem. I have been eyeing the R3 for the longest time. I will probably go mirrorless at some point in the future. I will just hold out for now!

By The Way, I have three extremely reliable “toys” in excellent condition.

I'm not suggesting you need a $6000 EOS R3, but take to heart the 'pros' are actively shooting with their top EF lenses on mirrorless bodies. The EXIF of this image yesterday shows the equipment.

Aside from the fact that I don’t know how to look at the EXIF, I shall take your word for it. I am abundantly happy with my Mark IV that a change to mirrorless will be a long time in the future. Besides all I need to do now is admire your work.
Thanks, Steve.
