I recently noticed a strange charge on my cc statement. When I went to question it, I was notified that the card would be canceled and a new one issued.

I use this card for many repetitive and auto-pay things. Changing all of those would probably take days, so I decided to wait. (Charge turned out to be legit).

I had previously tried to get an extra card that I would only use for online or auto payments, but cc company would issue it. Only one card per family member.

I suspect that many UHH members face the same problem. Any advice on solutions?

That's pretty much the procedure.

You contacted them and challenged a charge. They usually will consider the card compromised at that point (why wouldn't they?)

It turned out to be legit...meaning...you later realized you did make that charge.

It's a tightrope...you have to make really sure it's not your charge...before you make that call.
They will usually side with you...which they did in this case.

Yes. Because of so many fraudulent charges, CC companies have become alert to anything they think is suspicious. My card was blocked last month because of a fraudulent $700 attempted charge, and they sent me new cards. I got a call yesterday from the bank saying that my new card was now blocked because the CC company suspected a charge that I had made was fraudulent. Since it was a legitimate charge, the card was unblocked.

The woman from the bank said her card had been blocked again, too. The increased attempts by crooks to make fraudulent charges has caused problems for the industry. Some companies do not send extra cards, and some do. With more cards in circulation, there is more chance of one getting lost and being misused. I'm sure the CC companies hate the idea that customers don't have to pay for fraudulent charges. I hope that doesn't change in the future. You can be that they've been pressuring for changes in the law.

It’s even more of a problem when traveling.

Should say cc company would NOT issue extra card.

Bad typing fingers. Sorry.

I use one card for all online purchases. It (and all other cards) are set to notify me by email if the card is used without actually being presented - “card not present”. A great feature pretty much now available with all cards. Plus (as noted by others) checking transactions periodically is also good, but with the increased number of on-line transactions (due to pandemic) at best I look to ensure all the transactions are from stores/sellers/sources I recognize.

I've never had a bogus transaction go through, so that wouldn't work for me. The bank always notices something suspicious before I have the chance. I do have all my cards set to email me about each transaction, and that comes in handy.

Whenever a credit card is lost/stolen/used fraudulently, the credit card company will immediately cancel that, and issue a new card with new number.

I have several automatic recurring charges against my credit card, things like utilities, vendors, subscriptions, etc, and I use a program "Password Administrator." (There are several similar programs of the same genre.) It has all my important passwords as well as credit card usages. The data file is protected by ONE master password, which if forgotten will make the entire file useless. For each entity that will automatically charge against the card, I put [RECURRING] in the text of the entry. I can do a simple search for any item that contains [RECURRING] to show all in one list. That way I have all the info for each recurring charge, such as web address, phone number, passwords, etc, and when a change of card occurs, I can call on phone or change the credit card number online to the new number.
