I always loved that word .......
Judging from the girth of some of these riders, I might call them "Beefeaters."

Tarleton's Dragoons?
I have noticed at re-enactments that the guys playing dragoons almost always put on a horseback show acting as cavalry.
Their big thing was they were trained as both cavalry and light infantry with carbines instead of long muskets or rifles, and in many circumstances they dismounted and fought as light infantry. The US Cavalry of the westward movement actually functioned as dragoons. Especially when outnumbered and unable to make a successful retreat.
