Most residents opine that the Virginia side of Great Falls is more scenic, but MD is also nice. The C&O Canal is pretty as well, all along its several mile path parallel to the Potomac. Fletcher's Boat House sits between the canal and the Potomac, and can afford some nice scenes. Brookside Gardens in Wheaton/Silver Spring is gorgeous. Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in DC is also beautiful. The architectural lines of the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art are fun to capture, as is the art itself. A lot depends on what you like to shoot.

The Zoo and the Hazy are great to see. Was just there in August.

Don't know about photography but as as a kid I went to the printing and engraving where they make paper money. Still remember the sheets of bills before they were cut

Thank you for your poignant and stellar images ronichas...
Totally understand your "special" point of view here having lost colleagues there also.

Ok, one more conformation & recommendation for Great Falls (VA) National Park... Washington DC's finest...
Also please consider the the Billy Goat Trail on the Maryland side... the autumn foliage is at it's peak now

In DC itself, make sure you go to the memorials for all of the wars. The new Veterans wall is posted above. I have not seen it yet.

For the ones I have seen my favorites from a photo standpoint are the Korean, Vietnam and WWII. Visit them during the day and at night. Night time pics can be very emotional. Night time pics of the FDR and Martin Luther King memorials are very interesting too.

Great Falls for nature is a good choice.

Great Falls is very scenic. For birds, I recommend Huntley Meadows Park https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntley-meadows or Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve https://www.nps.gov/gwmp/planyourvisit/dykemarsh.htm. Both are in nearby Alexandria.

I second Huntley Meadows. I’m not sure what kind of bird activity you’ll see in November but in general it’s a reliable spot, especially in the morning. It’s also pretty much on the way to Mt. Vernon. I’ve never done Dyke Marsh on foot, only by kayak.

I enjoy Eastern Market for street photography on the weekends. Outside vendors and an indoor market too.

Ive been a few times and have a few suggestions. First, check the internet to see if there are any special events taking place, protests, etc. You may or may not want to photograph those. Second, if you or a family member are handicapped with a parking placard, take it. We drove my father in law, quite literally, up to various monuments and easily accessed them.

Of course, the various monuments, such as the WW2, Korean, Vietnam are not to be missed. If I were really into photography, I would check Photopills to see what the sun/moon conditions and try to get to the Vietnam memorial at just the right time. The sun up sun down time might be quite spectacular.

No trip to DC would be complete without seeing the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. See JFK burial site and more. Arlington, VA

We went there and saw a few moments of the Supreme Court proceedings...a complete waste of time. 20 something ushers / seating nazis rush people in and out, no photos (obviously), rude, obnoxious people. It was sad.

You may want to try looking at viator.com to see about guided walking tours...we've had great luck with them.

There is a large memorial to police officers killed in the line of duty in DC...moving.

We typically stay in Alexandria, VA and not in DC...at a Embassy Suites which is near a train station to get into the DC. Travel during day light hours and you should be ok.

I am planning a trip to Washington DC in mid-November.

I have researched many to the amazing places to see in the metro DC area.

I have also heard that Great Falls National Park northwest of DC is a great area for photography. I will probably have about 3 days outside of time in the metro area. Can you suggest other areas for scenery or even some bird photography? I will most likely rent a vehicle for time outside of the metro area places of interest.

Thanks for you suggestions.

I recommend Harpers Ferry, WV. The view of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers from Jefferson Rock there has been called a view worth crossing an ocean to see.

DC trip. I would prepare a list based on your priority. If you want photos without people walking thru your shots forget it unless you shoot at night. Parking anywhere close to attractions is nightmare. Uber a possibility. You may want to look at ten day weather forecasts for DC area.

Photographs of the Korean War Memorial at night is very eerie. The soldiers look like ghosts coming out of the woods. WW 2 Memorial is close and you can can capture that with the Lincoln Memorial. If you go to the Lincoln Memorial go to the extreme left to get the Washington Monument, the Capital and if your there on the right day, a full moon.
