I’m losing my internal battle to refrain from responding to this post. If your “friend” really asked “Why did you take this photo?” or something to that effect, it says a lot about him, and not in a good way!!!
He should go in and give the subjects hands-on posing instructions so he can take a “professional” image! There, I’ve vented. 😉
This is an excellent shot of what it is, a zoo venue. His "perfect" is the enemy of your "good."
IMHO, it is a great B&W shot, John.
I see nothing to criticize at all. Beautiful indeed! If the person taking time to make the negative remarks would only take the time to go to the zoo...
Couple of small nitpicks but overall a very nice capture. Maybe your friend should explain his critique. If he does please come back and post his reasons.

Did you ask your friend, or did he offer, how to make it a better photograph? I can see a few things that might improve it. However, I'd like to hear what your friend says.

He is a lifelong buddy, and he never gives me much direction/advice. Usually tells me my shots suck or he likes them. Not many like however.

Since this is a photo you like, why not take the opportunity to ask him for the specifics of what he doesn't like about it. Simply telling you it sucks is not helping you to learn and advance your photography. As a friend, he should be willing to help you even if it's just pointing out what he feels isn't right. If he tells you, for instance, that you are choosing the wrong aperture for depth of field, you can google "what is depth of field" or "how do different focal length lenses effect depth of field" and watch videos and read articles to find the information you need. He doesn't have to give you a class just suggestions of what's wrong.
