Film may be a "novelty" niche for some. The big question is the processing and digitizing the photos for those who want to save them or transmit them. The debate of analog vs digital is similar to the DSLR vs MILC. Those who wish to use each will make the personal decision and others may disagree. I truly believe each "faction: will continue to do their thing and may, in the future, decide to switch to another group. It is all personal and up to the individual.

An afterthought, I recently uncovered photos and negatives I took from the beginnings of my photography hobby and was quite impressed that nearly each and every one was in near perfect condition. Many dated back to the early 1960s. I hope to digitize them and save them on a hard drive and save the hard copies. I've even considered using my film cameras to compare my abilities with both digital and film, just for S&G.

Records came back. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Let's not forget Bob Malarz too who also shoots film and does a damn good job of it too.

As I recall, Bob Malarz shoots large format film. I don't believe that digital has caught up to that yet. I also believe that with the swing/tilt/shift features of a view camera, you can achieve things not possible with other cameras or in Photoshop. A view camera is probably the gold standard for architectural photography. Having said that, it still comes down to whether any film will be available in the future. If film manufacturers can't sell enough large format film to make a profit, then they'll stop making it, and some wonderful cameras will become mantle pieces.

For me, the appeal of film was to do my own darkroom developing and printing. I can't see the logic of shooting film and then digitizing it. When the first professional quality digital cameras were still very expensive I was already getting requests for digital images, so I got a film scanner. When I could afford a professional digital camera I was impressed with the quality of digital captures compared with scanned film. I still scan old negatives in order to have them in digital format, but I can never get quite the quality of darkroom prints I had made from the same negs.

Due to my mom being employed by Kodak in one of their retail sales stores, I had been a devoted Kodak customer. Over the years they quit making the films I use in the formats I wanted. I switched to Ilford. The only Kodak product I use now is their Fixer.

Oddly, they say they are the only film manufacturer. They seem to have overlooked Fuji.

That’s a pretty rough answer! I know several professional people who like and use film. The comments I hear is they enjoy the control they have when processing. I would think that would also be true with the Hollywood folks who prefer film too.

I still see quite a few film cameras around peoples necks in Manhattan, but maybe they are the fossilized hipsters from Brooklyn...

Maybe they will bring back Kodachrome? I might have a better chance of winning the Powerball..trying to get back into film with my three OM (OM-2n/2S/4T) bodies and lenses but digital can really spoil you.

What a contributary comment. Monsieur, I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

BTW, buggy whips are quite popular with the BSDM crowd. Please don't ask me how I know.

the most fascinating thing about film is that an artifact {ie slide or negative} is created at the time of exposure and was there. with digital there is no artifact until a Print is made.

I know. That's why the comment in the article about Kodak being the only one caught my attention.
