McDivit flew 145 combat missions in the Korean War, chase pilot for Robert M. White's North American X-15 flight on July 17, 1962, Commanded the Gemini 4 mission, and March 3rd, 1969, Apollo 9 with McDivit as Commander, launched from our planet on a ten-day Earth orbital Lunar module test mission with lunar module "Spider" and the command module "Gumdrop. 10 days later, after successfully completing 151 orbits of our Earth, Apollo 9 splashed safely down in the Atlantic, where it was retrieved by the USS Guadalcanal
