Hi Everyone ,
I've attached an image I took at the 'Animal Rebellion ' protest in Central london .
It was to promote the Vegan diet and show Animal Cruelty in the food industry .
One of their actions was to pour about 10 gallons on Cows Milk on the road .
I took these 2 photos but as you can see the milk on the ground caused lots on exposure problems , which could not be made better in PS ... It was ( to me ) a spur of the moment action so no time to make camera settings .. it was about 2pm with a very bright sun .
So I ask , what if any could have been done by me to improve the picture ... I always shoot one stop down all the time when outside .. could I have set the camera differently ' Just in case '
Its an OMD -EM1 mk one ..
Thanks
What exactly do you mean when you say "I always shoot one stop down?"
Minus 1 on exposure compensation ..
I do this so faces in sun dont get burnt out ..
I prefer an slightly under exposed image then I can bring it up on PS if needed .

I think he was using some sort of auto mode and sets it to under expose by one stop, but in this case the camera still over exposed the image.
I would say to him, you could use manual. If not, have blinkies turn on, with instant feedback you would have seen over exposure and shut down another stop or 2

Interesting photo as it is. I'm not sure what you were wanting to bring out more, but in situations like this I reduce the contrast (a lot in this case) to reduce the black of the darks and the white of the lights. And then to compensate so the photo i s not to light and grayish, I reduce the brightness (I prefer to do this by reducing the gamma value and not the brightness value). Here is my attempt, but it would better on the original. Experiiment. --Richard
In fast moving protests .. I set the camera to Speed 350 and let camera choose apperateur .
The image obviously has a large dynamic range. Check out HDR techniques. (High Dynamic Range). It involves taking multiple shots at varying exposure, then combining.

How would you do that with "fast moving" (per the OP) subjects, let alone milk being poured and splashed? Alas, it was a
dynamic scene in high dynamic lighting
To the OP, a couple of questions:
1. Can you load an unedited image to this thread, please? Make sure you have the download option enabled.
2. You shot this in raw, correct? I am curious about the exif showing you have camera saturation set to HIGH and sharpness set to HARD. I'm not sure if those settings affect raw files (I never tested); do you also shoot jpeg at the same time?
3. Have you tried using a metering mode other than center-weighted? From my Mark ii manual (I don't know if the Mark i is the same):
Hi , Im not aware of those hard settings .. will check ..
I must say that the OMD EM1 mk 1 menu is a nightmare ..
The original raw was in Olympus .. so had to convert it to DNG
to work with ..
No dont shoot Jpeg as well , only raw.
Will see if I can upload the original ..
Thanks

Thanks! I also just added a page from my Mark ii manual and another question, regarding metering mode.

I like P.H.Rubin's suggestion. Since I am somewhat of a minimalist, I would at least take this image and make another image from it that is darker. Then I'd combine the two images by some appropriate technique. This can be done with only one image.
Or one could do what some amateur astronomers do to go effect. They take a movie of a celestial object such as the Sun, and then choose several images from the mover ewunce and do a combination of those. --Richard

I don't know about the United Kingdom but in the Animal Kingdom, animals eat other animals while the are still alive and that is not a problem is it is just nature. Just like it is not a problem to murder your own child before it is born and use it for cosmetic and stem cells, that is not considered cruelty even though the child is not eaten. The only real wrong here is that milk could have been given to starving children in Africa or other 3rd world country.
As far as the image. Just review the image on the LCD and that another with the exposure 1 stop to the left

My thinking is that if the data is in the raw file, it can be pulled out of a single file by the raw editor sliders: lowering whites and highlights, raising blacks and shadows. And with more tweaks
selectively. If the data is non-existent, I don't know what making a darker copy would accomplish.
But I've been known to have faulty reasoning on occasion, so we shall see

Your image was shot in 'Shutter Speed Priority' at 1/350s, f/8 at ISO200, this is just over 1 stop above sunny 16 and its overexposed. For info the Exif shows an EZ of -2.
You used 'Centre Weighted Average Metering' that would likely have based its calculation on the 'darker' central area. For this type of grab shot you are better using a metering mode that averages the entire area.
