I suspect that many consumable products are both shrinking and being priced at higher prices, hiding the real increase from most consumers.

Overall, once inflation started, I think most companies have just taken the opportunity to increase prices. An example at our local grocery store is Wheat Chex. A year ago a box was $3.78 and now is $4.99. This is about a 33% increase and I really would be surprised if General Mills raw materials and labor costs have increased that much in one year.

Ice cream is no longer a half gallon. It's 1 1/2 quarts.

Soon it will be the size that we got from the ice cream trucks.....

Oh, wait, I'm told that consumers "want smaller packages".....

While I understand that companies have to make a profit and that costs are steadily going up for everyone, this shrinkflation and other marketing tricks companies play with their products is really starting to bug me. I for one, would rather pay an increased price for a product that I've been loyal to and use frequently, rather than change the size, quantity, or quality, of the product, especially doing so subversively. There are many examples of this, but the latest case in point and the one that has put me over the edge is Scott toilet tissue. I started using this product as a kid mainly because we had a septic tank/field and it was very good at breaking down in these systems and have found it to be consistently excellent and worth the price over rival brands. Frankly, I've used this product for many, many years and have been brand loyal to it. However, I recently noticed that it simply did not do the job as well as it formally did and with a bit of research learned that they did indeed shrink it in size and in thickness. I guess I gotta vent a little bit, but I wish these manufacturers would leave proven products alone and just pass along the rise in prices needed to produce and distribute the original product and still make a reasonable profit. How can it possibly be better to charge more for less quality, etc. not to mention that they try to slide it by you and hope you won't notice? So much for band loyalty at least for me! Anyway, thanks for listening.
While I understand that companies have to make a p... (show quote)

They just don't realize in the long run how much business they will lose by their deceitful practices. It is frustrating!

If Oreos discontinue double stuff, I'm out.

It's still double from regular, but twice a smaller amount is still a smaller amount.

I'm glad you understand companies need to make a profit...progress in todays world.

They examine it all very carefully...believe me.

If they think the best way to keep sales or improve it by shrinking slightly...that's what they will do.

They know the psychology of their market better than we do...that's for sure.

Please check the profits of Tyson, one if the largest suppliers of meat you buy at the grocery store. Profits are up over 40% from same quarter 2021 vs 2022..is that caused by inflation?

Your real worry is coming soon. When face masks become paper thin and narrower, we will then learn what shrinkinflation really is!!

Ummm...the thread is a complaint.

It's also just an observational fact...nothing has changed for 200 years.

Yeah, what a scam that was. However, it sure got them a lot of media attention, etc.

And the media attention…along with the ability to being back the original formula and call it Coke Classic…were IMO the idea all along. A pretty darned good marketing scheme I think.

One of my pet peeves out here in Maryland is the 12oz pound in grocery stores. Bacon is advertised, often on a pound basis, with 12 oz packaging. When I mentioned it to several shoppers, they had no idea that 12 oz is only 3/4 of a pound.

As a pharmacist, I know true weights and measures. Most people have become “dumbed down” by apothecary and avoirdupois weights and measures.
Many people think they are getting more because a company tells them 1/2 a pound is more than 3/4 of a pound.
