Moon 11/27/12

I was hoping to get a little more detail then I found this tip on line.
One important item to add to this ... if you photograph the moon when it is full you are effectively looking at it head on in almost the same plane of sight as it is being lit by the sun, therefore there are NO shadows or contrast. If you want to capture the craters and mountains then you need contrast and hence it is best to photograph the moon when it is NOT full, but 1/2 to 3/4 illuminated, so you are effectively seeing it from the side. Compare to a photo of a person's face straight on, you cannot see the shape of their nose, but from the side and you see the shape & definition. – Barry Semple Dec 12 '11 at 19:57

Hi Skipv, nice pic's, the 3rd one I think would look a lot better if it was cropped tho'. Just a personal comment.

For exposure, it is always noon on the moon, so "Sunny 16" rule is a good starting point:
1/ISO at f/16, and your shutter duration should be shorter than (or equal to) your lens focal length (to reduce camera shake).
Shutter delay, and a cable release are also advised.

Examples:
With a 300-mm lens:
ISO 400, 1/400-sec at f/16 =
ISO 400, 1/800-sec at f/11 =
ISO 400, 1/1600-sec at f/8.

With a 500-mm lens:
ISO 500, 1/500-sec at f/16 =
ISO 500, 1/1000-sec at f/11 =
ISO 500, 1/2000-sec at f/8.
