Yes, I have had it for years, and it is on auto-pay with my bank.

The background layer may be locked - does it show a padlock at the right hand end? If so you can click on it to unlock. That may let you clone the layer directly but I wouldn’t do that in case you mess up. Instead, hold control and choose the J key. That will make a copy of the layer (and it won’t be locked). Now click on the ‘new layer’ icon just in from the right hand end of the bar at the bottom of the layers stack. From memory it’s a rectangle but dither over it and it will probably tell you. That gives you a new blank layer above the copied layer. Now, with the clone tool chosen, check along the the top bar to ensure you are on ‘current and below’ - if it says ‘all layers’ change it to ‘current and below’. Now try cloning on the blank layer. Hope this helps - but don’t forget to check out the bits Fstop suggested, they are easy to miss!
EDIT: Just checked, the new blank layer icon is square with a plus sign in the centre!

magnetoman: no, the background layer was not locked.
I made a new layer (Cont-J), it was locked. I unlocked it and attempted to clone, nope!!
Could not doit!!

I hope to contact Adobe next week and discuss the issues I'm having with CS6extension.
It's an old program and as I recall, because it was a Student / Teacher edition, there were no updates.
(I was teaching, but not Photo-Shop, Criminal Justice)

Thanks again for the advice, really appreciate it!!
And thanks to the others that offered advice as well!!

Ok, so you’ve got a replica layer, now you need the blank layer on top - that’s the one you will clone on, not the actual image or replica image layer. To make the blank layer hit the little icon at the bottom of the layer stack, the square with a plus sign in the middle. If that doesn’t work you need Adobe. My advice is based on a subscription prog but should be good for CS6.

There is no need to change software. I am using Photoshop CS6 too. I opened image and had no problem cloning on it.

I suspect there is nothing wrong with your software... that you simply have something incorrectly set. I just have no way of knowing what that might be!

If you want to know what version of CS6 you've got, open it, go to the "Help" menu and select "About Photoshop". My copy is version 13.0.1 x64.

Possibly more important is the version of Adobe Raw you have installed. That's what has most frequently been updated. To find out what you have installed go to the same help "Help" menu, select "About Plug-In", then select "Camera Raw". The final version of Camera Raw, the most updated possible, is version 9.1.1

Good HOT afternoon here in southern Kansas!!!
Low 90's for the past 6-8 weeks!!!
As my (God Bless Her Heart) Mother would say, "hotter than the hubs of Haydee's" - that would be "Hell"

My Issue with using the Clone tool with the photo attached.
You notice the large "Brown" spot at the far right in the photo?
I was using my phone to send a text.

I did not want my "mug" in the Great Granddaughter Karsyn's first year party, thus the clone.

However, I was able to clone out "me" using the brown leather color of the couch.
I then tried to clone out my head using the color of the wall.
COULD NOT CLONE!!
I tried using several spots and still the same, could not clone.

What have I done wrong??
Why will it not clone my head off as the color of the wall??

I'm using PS CS6, extended, Student and Teacher edition.
I've re-set the software several times, still no cloning.

Thanks for your help to tell me what I am doing wrong!!
I'm not asking for you to clone me outta da photo!

I can't tell you what's wrong without seeing what you're actually doing, but here are the common mistakes I make with the clone stamp tool.

1. try to clone onto the locked background layer. It doesn't work.

2. After creating a blank layer to clone on (i.e. non-destructive editing), at the top selection bar, I fail to set 'Select' to 'Current and Below". There are no pixels to clone if you leave that selection on "Current Layer"

3. My most common mistake is to leave the 'Mode' set to 'Overlay' or 'Soft Light' (or some other blend mode) in the top selection bar. The Clone Stamp tool needs the 'Mode' set to 'Normal'.

While these may not be your issue, these are my mistakes that cause me problems using the clone stamp tool.

I would think that the spot healing tool would be helpful in that case.

Whatever you do, do not screw up your copy of PS6. It is Gold! I love mine, and can do everything I consider worthwhile to a photograph.
I find that as I grow older some obvious solutions escape me. Now I shut down and step away from the problem, then approach it the next day with new eyes. I often muck up the function of my Tools with the wrong keyboard command (or by laying something on the keyboard!), and have NEVER had the program be at fault!!
The most desperate thing I would do is open the PS6 manual (you bought one, didn't you?) and read from point one how to set up and use the clone tool, while actually doing it - on another photograph to avoid bias.

I do not have PS CS6 but there should be a way to reset the tool. Perhaps someone can tell you how.

Thanks for the information!! Yes, I'd bet this is more than half my problem / issue!!
One thing I do not understand is the fact that in the photo, I'm sitting on a Brown couch.
I CAN clone in the Brown area, but NOT from the Gray area of the wall!!
WHY???
Still, good information, just being able to apply it is a great issue!!!
Thanks for your reply to me. I srudy each UHH members thoughts and ideas. Still have issues with the clone tool!

A couple of other things to check. Make sure there is no selection ie Marching ants active. Even if you can't see them hit the Deselect feature under "Select" . Next, make sure your Caps lock key is not on.

That is always the first thing I check too when this happens. Even the smallest inadvertent selection will lock the rest of the layer from editing. Another is opacity may be nearly transparent.
