Close out the 'searching for images' screen and go to Windows explorer to see if you can access the SD card/reader that way. If you can't see it at all then it's a good bet that your port, card reader, or the card itself has quit and then go from there.

I am beginning to think I need a new card reader

it could be your card reader went kaput. I know it sounds foolish, but it happened to me. I bought a new card reader and haven't had any problems since.

PS - A light bulb just went off. You said Windows 9 and I just assumed it couldn't have been broken by a Windows update since Windows 9 is probably no longer supported... but, uh... there was no Windows 9?

Interesting...
My Windows computers have never said "looking for images" that I recall or noticed.
It does come up with a pop-up that asks how I want to open the media, Explorer, etc..
Are you running any software (eg. editor, cataloger) when you plug the card in?

Same here with the exception that I have made "Do Nothing" the File Explorer default. I never did like autorun because it frequently interrupted what I was doing.

As you might suspect I am not a computer guy at all.

Plus, sometimes I'll LOOK at a CD to see what files are on it. I don't want to RUN anything, simply peruse the CD.
Yea, I turned off auto-run!

That being said, we know that the sd-card is good and not corrupted, which leaves an issue with your card reader, and PC issue/usb port. At this point,
it's 1 or 2 things below. PC issue or carder. I think your USB port is ok. Have you been able to use a different device in your USB port.

1. replace the card reader
2. Try different pc

If it is Windows 10 and you're using "Windows Photos" to open and move your files be aware that MS has little compunction about breaking their own software with updates and then never doing anything about it to correct the problem they created. They did it once too often for me and now I use Windows Explorer exclusively to move, add, and delete files. Windows 11 hasn't failed me yet, but I'm cautious (and it's on a little used laptop, I'm doing my own beta testing). I agree that it sounds like a new reader may be in your future. Try plugging the camera into the same port the reader is plugged into. If you can read them that way, pretty certain it's the reader.

I use a simple card reader to transfer images from my Nikon and Olympus cameras to my Windows 9 computer. It plugs in to the usb port of my laptop. Ordinarily, when I slide a card into the reader, a screen appears on my computer that says it is looking for images, and after several seconds new images begin to appear so I can decide which images I want to save. Now, however, the computer doesn't find any images, but just keeps searching. Any ideas for a fix? Thanks

Windows 9?

And tried a different SD card? Is the suspect card by any chance locked? That should not, but sometimes does, prevent the card from being read.

I have tried 3 different cards. None work. Thanks for your interest.
