Single vs. multiple tabs in Safari is a real pain for me and I’d like to go back to a single tab. I can’t figure out how to make that my permanent personal option. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

Perhaps this is what you want:
Click Safari in the upper left corner,
Then click Preferences,
Then click Tabs,
Then change the drop down for Open pages in tabs instead of windows to Never

Try Command + click on a link to open. Or right click and select "open link in new window".
