Well, I don't think APPLE will be offering a full frame or APS-C or Micro 4/3 camera any time soon. It's not their thing.
Apple mostly uses the 48mp in a "quad pixel" design, where they combine the output so they get a 12mp file and much better low light performance. A few modes feature a 1:1 readout from the center 12mp of the sensor, which is noisier, but gives you a "closer" look at the subject. Apple ProRes Raw gives you all 48mp to play with in software.

By "They" I should have said Sony, Canon, etc. It seems that we should be looking for extremely high resolution on regular cameras soon if they are going to provide a product that outperforms the future phones.
