Usually cant answer cuz I just wouldnt know. Ask a left fielder how many steps was it to snag that pop fly. Ask a chef how many seconds to saute the onions.

I prefer to ask or answer the question of "why did you choose the settings you chose?" I want to understand or teach the questions, then the other person can work out their own answers.
Cheers.

Not knowing my "settings" I still might sometimes remember something that I could share such as "Im sure I cranked the ISO to get enough DoF". But acoarst the exact settings are useless even if I could recall them. I dont actually set numbers. I dial in "more of this, less of that".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If I were ever required to really report some numbers I woundnt hesitate to just make them up. But that situation has never arisen for me. My answers to most any really stoopid questions in life are often completely lies, avoiding the truth even if I knew it. No pearls before swine.
Then you should experiment !!!
I don't go by the exposure meter any more!!
I don't give a Rotund Rodents Rectum about the Histogram
Ooooooooh ... I really dig the histogram. I dont fuss over it or apply any silly rules to it. I just reeeeeally like it ! I also like the dancing frequencies "histogram" on my audio player.
some ppl just cant think for themselves and want a formula. what camera should i buy? what lens should i bring? we see those ?? a lot here. i usually ignore them but when i get a bug in my bottom i might reply the best camera is the one in your hand and the best lens is the one on it. how many times do we have to say its not the camera? ppl. the best authority is your own Mind.
I disagree with much of what I am reading here. I always try to be helpful and pass on my experience and whatever information I have. If people ask for my settings not only do I tell them, but I ask them what they are trying to achieve and then try to help them find the way to do it with their equipment. Knowledge is power, and it doesn't cost anything.
I learned long ago if people don't take time to earn something they don't take care of it or use it properly. And very few actually respect the provider of such information.
It is always easier to ask someone than it is to try yourself. Mommy did it for me...............
It is the norm to have the work done not do the work. People want to be spoon-fed rather than do the research.
Agree. My settings in my situation aren’t going to help someone else in a different situation.
Many people like to ask what settings you use when they see your good images. However, the settings along are useless. What more useful is telling them why and how you decided on those settings.
When I used to read photo mags, I always liked seeing the camera settings for beautiful images. They were usually not f/8 @ 1/125 sec. I liked seeing the unusual ways that images were achieved.
I would never ask someone I saw taking pictures what settings he was using, though.
I concur . . . . br While I'm not AAA, br It sure ... (show quote)
When someone ask me personally to help them and I can see the desire to learn and I will help them. But I am a lousy teacher!!
I was the same way in my field as an automotive mechanic, however in my 60+yrs in the field I had one young guy that really wanted to learn, he retired last year as a top mechanic in the big truck field.
