The presence of color plays a very key role for the essence of this image and location. The other treatments are OK; however, the color image says so much more.

Very well put, mooseeyes. I agree. :-)

The low tide and the beached boat seem to make the photo a perfect choice for Sepia. IMO sepia casts a somber mood that I believe is appropriate for the prevailing conditions.

Thanks for providing the comparison and for being willing to accept comments.

All the best,

This photo was taken of the Ship To Shore Lobster Company located in Owls Head, Maine. I am curious as to which of the renditions you like. The stats are:
ISO 400, 18mm, f/18, at 1/125 sec.

Sepia out for this shot for me,but the other two are great shots!!..I like B&W and this is a good one..sometimes its fun to color pictures in our minds eye!! B&W needs good contrast and you have it! I do like the color, but partial to the B&W on this one!!

Definitely colour for me too.

The b&w and sepia lose so much of what is of interest in the colour image.

With the extent of wet beach in the foreground that is grey, converting this to a B&W is almost a no-brainer for me. The addition of color doesn't add that much, and the B&W is really effective. I don't think it's a subject for sepia, or perhaps the sepia went to far? Anyway, my vote is for the B&W.

Bmac,

The question should be, which is the primary subject in the scene? The, Lobster Company on the pier? Or, the Fishing Boat in the foreground?

Which ever is going to add impact should be selected and made into striking color, while the remaining elements should go to B&W. Color shading of the B&W elements will not help, it causes distraction from the principle subject. You can decrease the brightness/contrast, and add soft focus to the B&W elements to give the colored elements more impact.
